How Your Explicit and Implicit Beliefs Are Sabotaging Your Success

John Assaraf explains why your conscious goals fail when your unconscious beliefs contradict them. Implicit beliefs rooted in your cerebellum drive actual behavior, so misalignment sabotages success. He prescribes neural coherence through rehearsal, visualization, and daily habits to align what you say you want with what you actually believe.

Hey, this is John. Welcome back. Now, in the last two videos of this three part series, I shared with you the importance of gaining absolute clarity on your exact goal so that you can have what a clear bullseye, a directive for you to focus on daily. And we talked about the reason you have to have a big why is for motivation, which is motive for actions. So you've got to come up with your big why you're going to achieve your goals. The other thing we discussed and I shared with you is that you have to create some strategies that is what you're going to do and then the tactics, which is specifics of exactly how you're going to do it within a certain time frame, whether it's a day, a week or a month. And that's what's needed to accomplish your goals. Now, in this video, I want to share with you something that even when you do the other stuff is really critical to understand. And that is the two types of beliefs that you and I have and how your habits may be useful in helping you advance and achieve your goals, or your beliefs and habits may actually be moving away from the goals and dreams that you now have. So the two types of beliefs that you have are known in the neuroscience field as explicit beliefs or implicit beliefs. Now, explicit beliefs are typically conscious, simple beliefs like I'm able to make more money, I am able to lose weight, or I am able to, to have a great relationship and I deserve to earn more and be happy. That's an explicit belief, one that's easy to just share. An implicit belief, on the other hand, is much more deeply rooted in your brain and specifically your unconscious brain. And there's a part of your brain called the cerebellum which manages many of your ingrained and conditioned motor skills and behaviors. So here is the problem which almost nobody understands except for you. Now, if your two types of beliefs are in opposition with each other, your unconscious one will almost always win and cause you to sabotage your thoughts, behaviors, and more importantly, you will not take action towards your goals and dreams past a day or a week or so. A hidden, disempowering implicit belief can be one that says to yourself, basically, I'm not good enough and that's lurking in your unconscious mind, or I'm not smart enough, or I don't deserve the goal or dreams that I want to achieve. So even when you have an explicit belief that you can declare that is in opposition of your implicit belief, you are going to succumb to the unconscious implicit belief and you will take Actions that match the I'm not good enough, I'm not worthy enough, I don't deserve to achieve success. I really don't know how to achieve success. And I know this so intimately because when I was 20, 21 years old, I had this outwardly explicit belief that I could learn how to make more money selling real estate, which is the vocation that I chose. But I also can tell you that I had this hidden unconscious implicit belief that I wasn't smart enough. Why? Well, I didn't do well in school and this caused me to have a lower than average self esteem. But more importantly, it caused me to sabotage my learning, it caused me to sabotage my behaviors and it caused me to procrastinate and I didn't do what I knew I needed to do to achieve my sales and financial goals. It wasn't until I learned the difference between the explicit and implicit beliefs and I learned how to let go of the negative implicit beliefs and achieve what we call is coherence, which is alignment between your conscious goals and your unconscious goals and dreams in your brain. And when you do that, that's when you will start to achieve your big goals and dreams, just like I learned how to. So when we're talking about the conscious and unconscious brain, let me show you something that will put a visual in your mind of how this works. Pay close attention because this is probably one of the most important lessons you will ever learn on what causes some people to achieve their goals and dreams versus other people to just set them and not achieve them. So let's say, alright, that this is your brain, which it's not of course, but let's divide this into your conscious, all right, and your unconscious. If you have a conscious belief that you are good enough, that you are worthy, that you can achieve doubling or tripling your income or living the lifestyle of your dreams. So let's say you have a positive idea in here, all right? But in your unconscious mind you have a negative self image, a negative implicit belief, a negative visual interpretation of what you're capable of achieving. A positive idea and a negative unconscious implicit belief is going to cause chaos in your brain. The key is to create alignment the goal and the dream that you have, let's say that's positive. You have to make sure that at the implicit level of your imagination, the implicit level of your beliefs, implicit level of your entire being, you have to create an alignment between the two. And when you create alignment between the two, you, you create what is known as neural coherence. When you have Neural coherence, you have the equivalent of an orchestra that's playing beautiful music in harmony together. When you have an unbalanced coherence pattern in the brain, guess what you have? You have chaos. And since your unconscious brain is so responsible for your thoughts and emotions and behaviors, you have to create alignment so that what you think, what you feel and how you behave are in harmony with both parts of your brain. And one of the best examples, if you think about a Hollywood actor or actress, when he or she gets a script that they don't know anything about except their agent has told them about it, they don't have any unconscious patterns for this script. They're just looking at it consciously. And once they make a decision that they want that role, and obviously they want to cash that million or ten million dollar check, what do they do to create that alignment that I just showed you between their conscious brain and their unconscious implicit brain, which is responsible for 96 to 98% of their thoughts, emotions and behaviors? Well, what they do is, is they read it every day over and over and over again. They close their eyes and they visualize the role. They study and rehearse the role, the actors, the vocabulary, the tonality. They rehearse everything over and over and over and over again with emotions. Then they play act. They play act, just going through the motions and act as if it's real. And what starts to happen is they start to create this coherence between the words that are on the script and their thoughts, their emotions and their behaviors. And so when you are looking to achieve your goals, what you have to remember is you want to get that coherence. And as I mentioned earlier, the first step, just like in having a script, there has to be absolute clarity on the script and the actors and the roles. You have to focus on absolute clarity on your goals. So you know exactly what to prime your brain to focus on. And as I mentioned earlier, you have to have a big enough reason why you want to achieve that. The second step was you create the strategies and tactics to accomplish the goals. And that is, what are you going to do? How are you going to do it? When are you going to get it done by? And then the third step is you've got to develop the right beliefs at the explicit and implicit level. And then you've got to follow through with daily and weekly habits to move you towards your goals and dreams and through repetition, using your inner game as well as behaviors. And you really start to line up your conscious brain and your unconscious brain to get you to act and be and feel and behave in ways that are consistent with the goals and dreams that you want to achieve. So I hope that you've enjoyed this because we're getting a lot of feedback and questions from individuals about how to learn more about this. And one of the questions that I get all the time is where do I start? Or what do I need to do and can you get some help from me? And the answer is I'll show you where to start by watching some of the videos you just watched, but I'll show you some more. And in the next few days I've put together something that I know is going to really take your goal setting to a goal achieving modality at a whole new level. And so what I'm going to ask you to do is watch out for my email in your inbox and I'll be sharing with you an exciting way for me to help you achieve the biggest, most amazing goals you have for your life. Probably bigger than you have ever imagined. And so just watch out for the email that's going to come in the next day or two in your inbox and I'll share with you how to get started on goal achieving at a deeper level. It.
