John Assaraf explains how chronic stress damages cognition, sleep, and immunity. He prescribes three to five minute "adult timeouts" throughout your day: close your eyes, breathe deeply, reset. Start three times daily and work up to hourly breaks.

Hi, this is John Asraf, CEO and founder of Neurogym. And I want to share with you a couple of ideas on how to reduce your daily stress that may be causing you to feel a little bit tired, lacking energy, maybe even lacking the ability to get things done. Now, so many of us feel stressed and we're always on the go, which in many cases really causes us to not do as well as we could be doing. And when we're stressed out, it really affects our energy system and our. A lot of us feel overwhelmed. I've been there way too many times. What I've discovered is that our brain is not designed for long term stress. And when you feel like you're on overdrive all the time for too long, it leads to a condition called burnout. And that's when you feel that easy stuff is hard to do and the hard stuff feels nearly impossible. Do you know what I'm talking about? We know that some stress is really good for you. It's like a little accelerator on the gas and it can help us muster up the energy to get things done. But too much stress shuts down your brain's ability to play at the highest level that you want to play at. And we also know that too much stress damages virtually every kind of cognition that exists, whether it's your memory, whether it's your executive function in your left prefrontal cortex, the CEO of your brain, your motor skills, it affects your immune system. And when that happens, we all know what happens. It disrupts our ability to get good quality sleep and we get sick. So what's the solution? I call this solution part of our inner size program. And inner size, just like exercise, can strengthen your mental and emotional muscles and your ability to work smarter from the inside out, a very simple and powerful inner size to reduce your stress is what I call the adult timeout. Here's what I want you to do. Open up your calendar right now and maybe when you're done watching this video and make a schedule in your calendar for your own timeouts. Deliberately put in your calendar some periods of time that are just three to five minutes of time, blocks of time. And what I want you to do is during that time, just close your eyes and take a few deep relaxing breaths. The very act of stopping and noticing your mental and emotional state and giving yourself a specific time to hit the reset button will help you reduce your stress in just minutes. When you start doing this, let's say three times a day for the next week and gradually increase it to four times five times and six times in a day, maybe every hour. What you're going to do in your at all Timeout and Inner Size program is going to help you become healthier, happier, and less stressed. And as a matter of fact, what we know will happen is your productivity will soar. You'll be able to get more things done in less time, easier and faster and better. So if you want to do a little Inner size right now, turn this video off and just close your eyes for three minutes, breathe in and out, and hit the reset button in your own mind and you'll be inner sizing. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that. Three minutes to your stress reduction. And guess what? I'll be seeing your amazing results. Because what I want you to do after that is leave me your comments and share this with a friend.
