The Universal Law of Cause and Effect

John Assaraf presents the "law of cause and effect" and applies it to achieving financial and life goals. He argues that results (effects) stem from internal causes—primarily beliefs, self-image, emotions, and habits—and that to change outcomes you must reverse-engineer a vision, set income goals, and change underlying subconscious drivers and habitual behaviours.

And what most people forget is that we are creatures of habit and we repeat our habitual patterns over and over and over again. And that is our brain's way of conserving energy and keeping us in our comfort zone. Hey, John Asraf here. Many years ago, I learned one of the greatest laws in the universe, and it's known as the law of cause and effect. And it goes like this. For every effect, there must be a cause. And so when I was learning how to earn income and to become financially independent, I learned how to reverse engineer the effect that I wanted. And I did this by learning how to set a vision for my life first, then the income that I would need to earn in order to live that vision and that lifestyle. And when we talk about cause, you have to really dive deeper than average in order to recognize that what causes your behavior or what causes you to not take action is obviously something happening in your brain. So there are several factors that really are the cause of your effects or your financial results, or any results in your life for that matter. So let's think about your beliefs as something that drives your behavior. So if you believe that you can earn, let's say, a million dollars a year, and you believe that not just at a conscious level, but also at a subconscious level level, chances are you're going to take action towards achieving that goal no matter what. If, however, you have limiting beliefs like you're not good enough or smart enough or worthy or skilled enough, chances are you're not going to take action. So the cause of not taking action in this particular case can be limiting beliefs. Number two is let's say you have a vision for your life where you can travel, where you can buy a nice car, have a nice home, enjoy the hobbies that you like, and get involved with charitable things that really stir your soul. And so let's say that's the vision of what you want. But what if you don't have the self image or self esteem that really believes that you can achieve that or deserve that? What happens when we have a vision or goals that are bigger than our current self image or self worth is specifically at a subconscious level. We will self sabotage any behaviors that could get us to achieve those goals. And so your self image is an important part of whether you will take action to achieve your goals or not. The other part that a lot of people just don't understand because we've never been taught this in schools, and for the most part our parents didn't know this. Emotions. Now, a lot of people don't know that emotions are triggered in the subconscious mind. So, for example, if you think of achieving a financial goal or a life goal that you have, but at the emotional level of your subconscious mind, if you believe that there is any real or potential danger or risk of you either losing money, you getting hurt, you being embarrassed or ashamed or ridiculed, motivational centers in the brain get deactivated. And also the genius left prefrontal cortex of the brain pretty much goes offline, and that prevents you from really coming up with ways and solutions and strategies and tactics to take action. So we have beliefs, we have self image, we have emotions that either are geared towards helping us achieve our goals and dreams, or they actually prevent us from achieving our financial and life goals and dreams. So, so these are some of the causes of the effects in your life right now. Another huge one are your habits. Now, the habits to make, let's say, $50,000 a year are very different than the habits and what you do to make 100,000 or 250,000 or 500,000 or a million dollars a year. And what most people forget is that we are creatures of habit and we repeat our habitual patterns over and over and over again. And that is our brain's way of conserving energy and keeping us in our comfort zone. And so if you don't have the habits to double or triple your income, if you don't have, you know, the daily, weekly, monthly behaviors that will help you achieve the financial and lifestyle goals that you want, that will obviously affect your results.
