What is your level of play?

John Assaraf presents a short coaching-style video framing life and business as a game with progressive "levels of play" (kindergarten, grade school, high school, university, pro). He urges viewers to choose which level they want to play at, then reverse-engineer the required beliefs, feelings, skills, behaviors, and commitment to match that level and avoid mismatched expectations.

Hey, this. John, I've got another question for you today. And this question is based on probably how I look at life and how I look at, you know, health, wealth, relationships, career, business, finances, etc. And I look at everything in life as a game. Just about everything is a game. And if everything is a game, then that means that there's rules of the game. And if you learn how to play by the rules, you can have probably a lot more fun playing the game now in business or in making money. If you thought of making money as a game or growing your business as a game, the question that you always have to ask yourself is what level of the game do you want to play at? And the reason I suggest that is when I see what people do and how people think and the stories and the excuses and the behaviors that I see, you know, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people a year, you know, I see their results, I can't help but think how many people have the desire, the goal, the vision, the dream of living an amazing lifestyle where they're debt free, they have money to travel, they have money to give to charities, they have money to do what they want to do, with whom they want to do it, when they want to do it, and they have a mismatched expectation and a mismatch between what they're doing and what they want, what they're thinking and what they want, what they're feeling and what they want. What I mean by that, if you looked at your life and if we focus specifically on your career or business or money, which is, you know, one of the programs that you are in right now, if you think about what level do you want to play the game at? Do you want to play at the kindergarten level where you just show up and you have fun and it doesn't have to be too serious and you learn a couple things? Or do you want to play at the grade school level where it gets a little bit more challenging or. Or do you want to play at the high school level where there's a lot more competition and people who are specifically skilled at one thing start to navigate through to the area that they are more skilled at and have a passion for. And then as you get to the university level, it actually breaks apart again and people start to specialize more in the things that they are passionate about, the things that they're skilled at, the things that are easy for them. And then there's another level, and it's called the pro level. And that's for the people who have, you know, the passion, the knowledge, the skills and the tenacity, the persistence and the fortitude to play at the pro level, which is very, very, very competitive. The most competitive level of the game is the pro level. And if you want to play the game at the kindergarten level, you don't really have to be too serious. You just come and show up and have fun. But each level of the game that you determine you want to play at comes with it a way of thinking, comes with it a way of feeling. And comes with it a certain behavioral pattern that is either a little bit or a lot. Whether it has a little bit of margin for error or, or a lot determines on the level of the game. At the pro level, it takes an enormous amount of mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and behavioral fortitude to play at that level. And that is reserved for the people who are willing to do whatever it takes and have the knowledge, the skills, and the aptitude to to play at that level. So the reason for this particular video is I want to make sure that you align the level that you want to play at and then reverse engineer. What do you need to think at that level? What do you need to feel to play at that level? What skills do you need to have? What knowledge do you need to have? What behaviors must you take to play at the level that you choose? See, I can't help you choose the level, but I can help you understand the beliefs, the habits, the behaviors, the perceptions, and the behaviors to play at any level you choose. Because all of those are already knowns for just about anything that you and I want to achieve. So what I want to do is make sure that you don't set yourself up for a mismatched expectation. Meaning you want to be financially free and have discretionary time and discretionary income and an amazing lifestyle, but you're not willing to invest the time necessary, the practice necessary, and the application time that's required to be able to play at the level that your goals and dreams are at. So do this and create a little checklist for yourself. Number one, what level do you want to play? Kindergarten, grade school, high school, university, or pro level? And then ask yourself this question. What do I need to believe? How do I need to feel? What behaviors do I need to take? And what is my level of commitment and resolve and tenacity and follow through to play at that level? And wherever you may see a disconnect, fill that hole up and raise the game to play at the highest level that you're capable of achieving and capable of playing at. So choose your level, then reverse engineer everything else you need in order to play at that level.
