Why Only 3% Succeed and 97% Fail

John Assaraf explains why 97% of people fail at their goals. Most skip the foundation: a clear vision, a specific why, and daily mental priming. He walks through visualization and mental contrasting techniques that separate the 3% who succeed.

Hey, good morning everyone. It is 9 o' clock in San Diego and we are live. And we're doing live today as always, on Tuesday mornings. We do a live session every Tuesday morning on Facebook on my fan page and we're actually streaming on Instagram today. So hey there to all my amazing Instagram followers as well. And if you want to join us on Facebook, it's on my Jonasrath Facebook. And today we're going to be Talking about why 3% succeed and 97% of the people fail at achieving all of their goals and dreams. I know it's a big, bold statement and I'd love to get your feedback. Alright. As we gather a lot of people on Instagram and on Facebook. I'm live here on Facebook right now, as I am every Tuesday at 9:00 clock Pacific time. And so I'm going to ask you a question. Why do you think that 97% of the people fail at achieving all of their goals and dreams and 3% of the people really succeed? Do you think it's knowledge, skills? What do you think it is? Let's have a little dialogue and let me say hello to Rivera, to Karen, to Ann Ball, to Carla from Reno, Karen from Laguna Beach. Why do so many people not achieve their goals and dreams? I'm going to give you a whole bunch of clues today, and it's based on my Having it all book, lots of great stuff. And I'm going to be giving away 100 copies of my Having it all book today. So stick around, I'll show you how to get a free copy of it. But why do so many people have goals and not achieve them? All right, Their will to succeed, their attitude. Hey, Sasha from Moscow. So there's a lot of, you know, speculations to why people don't succeed at achieving their goals. I've got a totally different view on that. And it's all based in neuroscience, all based in how the brain works and what causes perceptions, thoughts, emotions and behaviors. I want you to think of something. Every result you have in your life, the good ones, the challenging ones, the bad ones, those are all effects, right? Effects no differently than if you look at an apple on a tree. The apple obviously is attached to the branch which is attached to the tree which has got what roots that were all started by a seed. And so we're going to talk about the seeds of success instead of success itself, which is an effect. And most people look at effects and try to focus on the effect. And I look at effects and focus on the cause. If I want to change the effect. And so so many people do not succeed because they're focusing on the wrong things. And so the first thing that I want to make sure that we are clear about, if you think about 1969, I believe July 1969, in the morning of July 1969, we did not know if we could put a man or woman on the moon. But by that evening, we knew we could. How? Somebody started off with a vision. I think it was John F. Kennedy. Even when we didn't have the tools to put a man or woman on the moon, we didn't have the technology, we didn't have the machinery, we didn't have a lot of the components we needed to achieve putting a man on the moon. It started off with a vision that was clear and precise. How to put a man or woman on the moon came afterwards. But the first thing that every human being that wants to achieve a goal has to start with is a clear vision of exactly what it is that they want to achieve. So my first question for you is, do you have a clear and precise vision that if somebody read it, they would know exactly what it is that you want to achieve? So that's number one. Number one, by the end of that day, we knew how to put a man on the moon, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldridge were the first two humans to walk on the moon. But it started off with a vision. So do you have a vision? I'm going to keep this going pretty fast, and then we're going to go into a little bit of a fun exercise that I'm going to share with you, and I'll share with you why it's so important. The next part is that you have to have specific goals to achieve on the way to that vision. So you have a vision that the end result of what it looks like, feels like, smells like, tastes like. And then you have to create goals for your brain to focus on. If you don't have clear and precise goals that will help you achieve the vision, then your brain is going to be caught up in the 50,000 other thoughts that are percolating from the trillions of cells that do what? Talk to each other all day long, 35 to 50,000 thoughts a day. If you don't have a vision of what you're focusing on, if you don't have goals of what your brain is supposed to be focusing on, it's not going to be focused all of its attention units on what it is you want to achieve. And to show you something of why it's so important to have goals and a vision that are clear and specific. I want you to take a look at this. How many of you have seen the FedEx logo? All right, I'm going to show it to everybody on Instagram and on Facebook. All right, how many of you know where the arrow is in the FedEx logo? And I've done this before on Facebook. And so how many of you know where the arrow is in the FedEx logo? And the answer is, again, I'm going to try and keep this fast. Today is look between the E and the X. Look between the E and the X. Right over here is an arrow. Now, if you never saw this before, then that's because your brain didn't have something to focus on that you were priming it to focus on. But once you give your brain the instruction to find the arrow, it finds the arrow, because that's what you're focusing on. But now take a look at this. All right? And this is for all of you on Instagram, for all of you on Facebook. All right? Do you know where the little measuring spoon is in the FedEx logo? Where is the little measuring spoon in the FedEx logo? And I'm going to cover my face just so you can see this. And the answer is, the little measuring spoon is right over here. Okay. Right over here, there's a little measuring spoon. Okay. Now, why is this little example so good? Why? Because as soon as you give your brain the instruction of what the vision is for, what you want to achieve upon completion, and what the goals are that you have it look for, it will laser your brain in on being able to achieve that goal. Most people have very, very scattered goals. They don't have the precision of the focus that is needed to achieve their goals where they know exactly every day, that's the vision they're working towards every day. These are the goals they're moving towards, and this is what they want to focus on. And so why do 3% succeed and 97% of the people fail is because most people don't have a process to succeed that is methodical, organized, and focused. That's rule number one. And, Dan Evanich, since you are bored as usual, according to your comment, it would be wonderful if you just left, because that's your option, my friend. All right, so vision number one, goals number two. And here's the other part is, what is your big why? If you don't have a big reason why you want and must achieve your goal, you will do what's Easy and what's convenient. You'll do what's easy and what's convenient instead of doing whatever it takes. And so you need to ask them, why do I want to achieve that vision for my life? Why do I want to achieve those goals? And and come up with reasons why. I'm just going to show you a whole bunch of different reasons why. Make the world a better place. Be an inspiration to your family. Show your friends you can do it. Know that your life really matters and has purpose and meaning. Feel better about yourself. Serve God. What is your reason why you must achieve your goals? Most people have goals that they hope they achieve, that they want to achieve, that they wish they can achieve, that they'd really like to achieve, but they don't have goals that they must achieve. And if your goals are not must achieve goals, chances are you will not do whatever it takes to achieve those goals. So that is third reason why most people fail. While 3% succeed. Successful people find their big whys and follow through. All right, let me share with you another part of this why people fail to achieve their goals. They have hidden stories and excuses in their brain. They have hidden stories, excuses, and they first and foremost don't know what their money story is. Health story is relationship story is their career story is. Their business story is that they keep telling themselves over and over and over again. And they don't question their beliefs so they believe they're not good enough, not smart enough, not skilled enough, not worth enough. They don't have the time, they don't have the money, they don't have the fill in the blank. They're not worthy or not fill in the blank. And so you have to know what they are in order to counter them, to be able to let go of any of the stories or the excuses or the hidden beliefs that are patterns in your brain that keep repeating themselves over and over and over again. I'm going to give you a plan for how to get over all of these in just a moment. Okay? First and foremost, if you like this and this is making sense, hit the like button or the love button so I can get some feedback from you. I've got a lot of material to cover today, so I don't want to waste your time or mine. All right? Does this make sense? Give me a like or love right now and I'll see it fluttering across my screen and it'll give me some extra juice and energy to keep going. All right, so good. We see a lot of people joining us, so we're talking about why 3% fail and no why 97% fail and 3% succeed. So far we've talked about because they lack vision, they lack goals, they lack a big, you know, why they must achieve their goals. And now we're talking about hidden beliefs and stories. All right, so hidden beliefs and stories. You have to identify what your hidden beliefs and stories are. And there are tons of them. Okay, so let me share with you some of the things you can do to overcome many of your hidden beliefs and stories. Number one is you want to first get clear about what it is you want to achieve. The vision for your health, wealth, relationships, career, business, fun, experiences, charities. You want to have a clear vision. You want to have goals for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 120 days, etc. Towards those goals. And you want to have a big why so you have the motive for action when you don't feel like it. That is step number one. Step number two, what I want you to do is I want you to prime your brain daily. Priming your brain daily means that every day when you wake up and you should look at your goals and your vision and your why and you should get emotionally attached to them. And what you want to do is you want to start to see yourself play a mental movie of seeing yourself achieving the goal that you want to achieve. I want you to be able to see the goal clearly in here. Why? Because when you see it in here, that's when you'll project it out into the real world. That's when your behaviors start to change and become your new reality. A lot of people wait and guess what you are waiting for. You're waiting for something to happen out there to prove to you that you should celebrate and experience it and have it in here. And the way that your brain works is if you make it real in here, it's going to drive your thoughts, your emotions and behaviors so that your results in the physical world start to match the image in here. But if you keep thinking and looking at what is right now. What are my results? How much money do I have? What do I weigh? How happy am I? If you keep looking at what is, you're going to keep recreating what is. What I want you to do is I want you to focus on little bit on what is just so you know where you are. But I want you to focus on the vision and the goals and the why to achieve that. Okay? And yes, when you set goals, you also have to understand how am I going to achieve those goals? What are the action steps that I need to take on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday towards achieving all of those goals. But you want to start experiencing the joy of achieving the goal. Number three, you have to know what obstacles are in your way. Are they strategic obstacles? If you just don't have the knowledge or the skills, are they you're lacking money? Are you lacking knowledge? Do you have hidden beliefs or known beliefs that are holding you back? Whether it's hidden stories, why do you want to know what your obstacles are? Because if you don't know what your obstacles are, guess what, you're playing blindly. You need to know how to overcome the obstacles. And one of the ways to overcome your obstacles is to do something called mental contrasting. And I talked about this last week or the week before. And what is mental contrasting? Mental contrasting is a way of taking every obstacles thinking about it, but then seeing yourself overcoming it. So you give your brain the visual experience of overcoming a known obstacle, and it then starts to work on your behalf to think and feel and do things to overcome the obstacle. So you practice it in here so that your behavior looks or change changes accordingly to achieve your goals. So you focus not on being upset at the obstacles, you focus on being smart about obstacles and seeing yourself overcoming them. And then you ask yourself a question, how can I overcome this, that and every other obstacle? So we've been doing this for about 19 or 16 minutes already. So that's number three. Number four is you have to create a plan. Why do 93 or 97% fail and 3% succeed? Because it is estimated only 3% of the people who have goals actually create a plan of how they're going to achieve their goals. And then visualize, emotionalize. And I came up with a word for you. It's called ActionAlize. And for those of you on Instagram, all these slides are on my Facebook page, on the fan page, where people are watching them right now. So you've got a plan if you want to achieve a specific goal, what is your plan specifically? The strategies, the tactics and the timelines. And so if you don't know how to plan, you need to be able to get some help. And you can find plenty of help on YouTube. All right, I've got an amazing video on achieving goals on YouTube. It's got about a million and a half, 2 million views already on strategies, tactics, timelines and how to achieve them. So go to YouTube and watch it later on. The other thing I want to share with you, I'm giving away 100 copies of my book today, it's called Having It All. It sells for about 15, 16 bucks on Amazon. I'm going to give it away to the first hundred people who want it. You just pay for the shipping and handling. I think shipping handling is like seven bucks if you're in the United States, 15 bucks or so if you're overseas. I'll pay for the book, you pay for the shipping. I'm giving away a hundred today. My team's going to put a link on the bottom of this page or in this comment page for you to be able to get that. And in here, I go through step by step, what I'm talking about today, but way, way more. So free copy to the first hundred people of the book. All right, so plan, visualize, motion, actualize. Then you've got to get through. What I talked about before, hold on a second. Is your mental or emotional barriers. So the mental or emotional barriers of I should, I could, I would, or I will have to become musts. You've got to get out of your comfort zone. Even though you may be comfortable where you're at right now, you do not belong there. If your goals are bigger than your comfort zone. You've got to overcome your negative mindset. So how do you overcome your negative mindset? First and foremost, you have to become aware of yourself. Self talk. You have to become aware of your dis or your unpleasant emotions and shift negative mindset into a positive mindset. Unpleasant emotions into positive emotions. Why? Because your emotions are what drive your behavior. And if you have doubts and fears, they're going to cause anxieties. If you're lacking knowledge or skills, it's going to cause a lack of confidence. But it's uncertainty. In a lack of confidence and certainty, you are going to activate the right prefrontal cortex and the amygdala part of your brain, and that is going to put the motivational brake on and you are not going to take action. So you have to become willing to overcome your mental or emotional obstacles. And then you've got to use your past experiences to move you forward instead of holding you back and defining your future. And then there was something that my friend Jim Rohn said many, many years ago, and that was, you're either going to pay the price of discipline or you're going to pay the price of regret. And discipline weighs ounces. Regret weighs tons. And so what is a daily discipline? A ritual that you can get into to focus on positive self talk, to focus on creating your plan for the day and exiting, executing it to being able to look at the end of the day at what you've done, what you've accomplished and assess your day based on a scale of 1 to 10. One means you really didn't make a lot of progress. 10, you made a ton of progress and you're going to have another great day tomorrow. All successful people figure out a way to get high impact activities done every day. Let me repeat, all highly successful people figure out a way to get high impact activities done every single day. If you are doing the trivial many instead of the critical few, the trivial many instead of the critical few, you will not achieve your goals and dreams. You have to learn how to focus on the critical few instead of the trivial many. How do you do that? Take a sheet of paper one, write down everything you need to do personally and professionally and then prioritize. Out of all of these things for my career or business or health or wealth or relationships, which are the top three I must and will get done today? Which are the top three I must and will get done today? If you can focus on three things that you must get done today, at the end of the year you'll do one thing, thousand things that must get done. And when you do the must instead of the like to easy to want to, you will start achieving more goals and dreams than you ever have achieved in your life. Most people are wasting so much time on the trivial many, they're not focusing on the critical few things. The little hinges that swing the big doors. That's why 3% succeed and 97% fail. Are you liking this so far? I am packing this with lots of pearls of wisdom for you. Hit the share button if you are enjoying this. Okay, let me give you one more, two more things over here and I'm going to give you a little technique to overcome some negative self talk. And so your expectations are too high without real knowledge or skill. All right, so that is on my mental or emotional barrier. Alright? So expectations are too high without real knowledge or skill. In order to achieve a goal, you need to know how to achieve a goal at a certain point. Okay? You have to know how to achieve the goal. So you either know how to do it, you're going to find somebody who knows how to do it or you're going to get somebody to do it for you. But if you don't have the knowledge or the skill, you are going to lack confidence and certainty. And when you lack confidence and certainty that this thing here called your brain goes into fear and stress mode. And in fear and stress mode. The creative genius part of your brain, the Einstein part of your brain basically shuts down. And the Frankenstein part of your brain, the one that doubts, has fears, has anxieties and comes up with all the reasons why you can't, why you won't is what rules the day. So you have to decide in order to achieve the goal that I want to achieve, what knowledge or skill do I need to acquire? Because you will only achieve the goals and dreams that you have that you can either do or get help to get it done. Let me give you one, two more bullets. Making excuses or stories? Making excuses or stories. Can we show that slide again? So, making excuses or stories. All right. What excuses or stories are you telling yourself? See, if you are in the inflammation disease of choice, making excuses or stories, you are not going to achieve your goals and dreams. And too many people have reasons why I didn't achieve it or can't achieve it. You have genius ability. Genius ability trillions. Okay, 18 to 500 trillion processes per second going on in this genius ability brain of yours. You really don't have any excuses except the ones you give yourself and the ones you focus on. But be aware, what is it that you are using as your big goals and dreams? What are the stories you are using? Alright, I just saw a comment from an idiot called Fooslibar so that we will delete from our Instagram account. Please, Danny. But some people leave weird comments. There's something wrong with their brains. So not working all there, but that took me off for one second. So what stories and excuses are you using? And then you got to check your negative self talk. So for those of you who just joined me, I'm giving away 100 books, free books today. There's only 100 to give away today. I may give away some in the Future, but there's 100 today. You just pay for the shipping and handling. I paid the 15 bucks for the book already, so it's $7.95 I think for the, for the shipping to the United States, 15 bucks or so internationally. And so if you want a copy, there's information on the bottom. Alright, so how do you deal with negative self talk? So if you have a goal, if you have a vision, but you also have negative self talk or just real self where you say I don't know how to achieve that goal. So you want to shift any I don't know how into. In the past I didn't know how and now I'll find out how. So whatever it is that you Are saying to yourself, become aware of it first. So that you can see that when you say to your brain, I don't know how, your brain says okay. When you say, I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, I'm not worthy, your brain says, okay. So the first thing is you have to recognize your self talk. Why? Because your self talk is the instruction for the electrical and chemical signal that is sent into your bloodstream that you feel and those feelings are what drive behaviors. So if you're feeling like you're not good enough, not smart enough, not worthy, if you're feeling like you're not skilled enough, not knowledgeable enough, if you're feeling like you've tried before and failed, all of these thought patterns trigger emotions. That puts the brakes on motivation. And when the brake is put on motivation, you see, stay in your comfort zone. So the key is to be aware of two things. Self talk and how to reframe your self talk. And you reframe your self talk by the method I showed you. I used to think this way. Or if it has to do with feeling, it's becoming aware of the feeling. And recognizing that feeling is the effect of a thought pattern that's been triggered either by something externally or something that's a pattern that you keep repeating over and over and over again. So emotions are effects. What we want to do is move to pleasant emotions versus unpleasant emotions. And the way to do that is you start off with self talk. Self talk triggers the electrochemical reaction in the brain which causes causes a feeling, but also the process I showed you before for cognitive priming. Seeing yourself overcoming the obstacles. Seeing yourself overcoming, not having enough knowledge. Seeing yourself overcoming, not having enough skill. Seeing yourself overcoming feeling like you're not good enough, smart enough, worthy enough. When you play that mental movie in your brain over and over and over again through mental contrasting, which I talked about just about five, six minutes ago, you are giving your brain a new code of instructions of behavior. What to do when you are fearful, when you are neurologically stressed because you're feeling not good enough, not smart enough, not worthy, unskilled, lacking confidence, lacking certainty. The default behavior is procrastination. That's the default behavior. And when you procrastinate, that's when you focus on all the little piddly stuff that's useless to achieving your goals and dreams. That's when you focus on the trivial, many little things instead of the critical few things. When you have more confidence, when you have more certainty, when you are self talking in A way that's positive. When you are in a pleasant emotional state, that is when your motivational center kicks in. That's when the left prefront frontal cortex kicks in. And that's the part of you that figures out how you can and comes up with all of the creative ideas on how to achieve your goals and dreams. For those of you on Instagram that want a copy of the book, go to my Facebook fan page and it's in the chat over there. And again, there's only 100 of them that we're giving away today. So why do 97% fail and 3% succeed? Because 97% of the people will listen and watch this and not do anything about it. And 3% will take action. 3% will upgrade their knowledge, upgrade their skills. They'll check their self talk. They'll prime their brain daily. They'll have their vision, their goals, their plan. And they'll overcome the mental or emotional obstacles that hold them back. Okay, I did that in 30 minutes. All right, so what does that mean? It means you get your vision, your goals. Let's get this going. All right. Your why? You get your beliefs in checks. You get your daily habits in check. You get your emotions in check. And that is when you are going to start being part of the 3% club and achieving all of your goals and dreams. Anything less than that, you are hoping and praying to achieve your goals and dreams and you will stay part of the 97%. There is a science to achieving success. You want to learn more about it? 100 free copies I'm giving away today. All you've got to do is pay for shipping. I will pay for the book and there's a link on my Facebook fan page for you to be able to do that. Okay, there's your 30 minutes of power.
