John Wetmore argues recruiters should stop selling impossible dreams and start listening to candidates' real problems: car payments, kids' sports, actual financial pressure. Success comes from understanding where people really are, not promising what they can't reach.
I think the mistake most people make is they, when they're recruiting, they sell this vision that's just unreachable for most people. You know what I mean? So I'm trying my best to relate to them, understand their situation, and solving their fucking problems. Their problem is their car payment and their kids' sports and gymnastics and all this stuff people got going on in life. So I'm really trying to pay attention again where they're at, where they're trying to go. Where they're at means you got to understand them. What are their issues? What are their finances? Who doesn't have financial issues? Shit, you make a million bucks, buckle up, you're still going to have them. I promise.
