Joni Patry Vedic Astrology verses Western Astrology

A YouTube video by Joni Patry in which she explains why she transitioned from Western (tropical) astrology to Vedic (sidereal) astrology. She recounts her 20-year background in Western astrology, inspiration from Paramahansa Yogananda, finds Vedic astrology (Jyotish) cleaner and more predictive, and plans to explain key differences between the systems from her practical experience.

Hi, I'm Joni Petrie and welcome to my YouTube channel. Today I want to talk about something that's very important everyone seems to want to know. And this is part of a question that was asked of me to do YouTube show on. And that is why have I chose to do Vedic astrology which uses the sidereal system over tropical Western astrology? Well, in case you didn't know, I did Western astrology for about 20 years prior to really getting into the Vedic system. And to be honest with you, it started from reading a book called the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. And what I discovered from reading that book was that Paramahansa Yogananda, who is just the most brilliant, compassionate man that was truly a saint of his time, his guru, Swami Seyuth Swarm, was a Vedic astrologer. And this was back in the 70s that I discovered this and I was like, okay, what is Vedic astrology? Because I really want to know if the yogis are following this that are so evolved. So I got into studying Vedic astrology. I felt like it was so hard and difficult. I put it down many times.
But then I realized that it was a much cleaner system. And finally when I found out that it was made reference to in the ancient Vedas and that it's called Joytish and Joytish actually means the science of light, I felt like I had to learn Vedic astrology no matter how hard it was. And the process of learning was quite difficult, especially coming from Western astrology, because you tend to argue you well in Western astrology it's this way. Why is it this way? They're completely different systems. But I find that Vedic is so much cleaner. And from the vantage point of using both systems, trust me, this one is more predictive and I have and I get my results are so much more accurate. So I think I can talk about both systems, being that I completely and totally immerse myself in both of them. And I find it so interesting that people may talk about Vedic astrology as, you know, not being correct when they've never even practiced it. I am not going to claim to be the astronomer or the mathematical calculator that many astrologers can be, but I have had so much experience with chart reading millions of charts throughout my life and there is really no comparison in my opinion, and this is truly from experience. But let me tell you what the difference is.
Western astrology is based on the seasons that are constant and never change. Every spring you're going to have the sun in the same position in the sky which creates the, you know, the, the growth of the plants and the new beginnings and the leaves of spring, everything starting to grow again. As well as the summ, the sun is closest to the earth and the angle causes the warmth and temperatures. So in other words, the tropical system is a solar based system. And that's probably why you can so totally connect to your sun sign because it's based primarily on the cycle of the sun which never changes from year to year. But Vedic astrology is what I call a lunar based system. So it's based on the moon. In India they use the lunar calendar, it's the 27 day lunar calendar which is relative to the 27 nakshatras. And it's more perfect in its order because we have the cycle of the moon 27 to 28 days. Whereas the western calendar, the Julian calendar is a man made calendar and is imperfect. We have leap year, we have, you know, Julius and Augustus Caesar, they actually had to choose months that they wanted to have 31 days and be in the summer. So that's why we have July and August. But to really fine tune the difference when we're looking at Vedic astrology, I use the equal house system. So there is, there's none of the distortions of the houses that you get with the Western Placidus or the Koch system of astrology because of the longitude and latitude where you are on Earth. So to use the equal house system you definitely know what planets are ruling what houses. Now as what I call myself a neo Vedic astrologer, which I incorporate the outer planets with Vedic astrology. The outer planets may work, but they do not rule houses. They, this system of Vedic astrology uses the houses in terms of the old rulerships. So you will find that the planets that rule particular houses based on the old rulership really, really produce results. It's so convoluted. When you start using the outer planets, they just don't work in terms of house rulerships. The old system is in perfect divine order. So I think it's all involving the moon and like I said, it's a lunar based system. Why? Because when we use the predictive techniques of Vedic astrology we use the dashas. And the dashas are based on where your natal moon is in your birth chart according to what Nakshatra it's in because the 27 nakshatras are ruled by planets just like the signs are ruled by planets. So when you take, when you take the 27 nakshatras and you realize where your moon is, what Nakshatra, what planet rules that Nakshatra. This starts the whole cycle of your life and will dictate when things will occur in your life. And it's the most perfect system I have used for prediction. And furthermore, just to give you the relevance of why is it the Vedic planets fall backwards almost a full sign, 27 degrees? It's because of precession of the equinoxes, everything is constantly moving. And what's happening, all the constellations and stars that we see in the night sky, they're called fixed stars because in a lifetime they never really move, they stay situated, but they are moving. And over a period of over 2000 years, from where the zodiac started at 0 Aries all the way to where it is today at, you know, the year 2015, it's slightly moving backwards. All the fixed stars are moving backwards. And these are relative to the signs of the beginning of where the Zodiac starts. So at this point in time, as compared to Western astrology, which it started at 0 degrees of Aries and never changes, the Vedic sidereal chart takes into account the shift of these stars which constitute the signs. And at this point, they have moved backwards almost 24 degrees in the zodiac. So the difference between your Western chart, tropical chart to the sidereal Vedic chart, all the planets, including your Ascendant, will move backwards about 24 degrees. And these are actually where they are in the heavens according astronomically, you can ask an astronomer. So the western placements are actually not accurate astronomically. And one of the things I might just put out there, people can argue all they want. I'm telling you this system is superior for prediction. So with that, that's one of the reasons why I choose to work with Vedic astrology. It's far more accurate. And so with that, if you'd like more information or a chart reading, you can always go to my website, which is GalacticCenter.org thank you.
