Road Scholar is a nonprofit turning 50 that started as Elder Hostels, offering older adults dorm stays and university lectures. It has evolved into an educational travel organization that takes people across the country to learn through experience rather than a classroom.

Tell us about Road Scholar. What is it and what is the mission of Road Scholar?
Yeah, so Road Scholar has been around almost 50 years now. We're celebrating our 50th anniversary next year. But when we were founded, we were called Elder Hostels. So some of your listeners might recognize that name. And when we first were founded, we were a little bit different. We took older adults to college campuses and they would stay in the dorms and eat in the dining halls and learn from from the professors in the lecture halls. So it was still about learning, and you still could travel to different places across the country, but it was really more of like a back-to-campus type experience. And we've evolved over the last 50 years to be more of an educational travel organization. So we're still a nonprofit, we still serve older adults, and we're still all about learning.
