Black Francis turned a demo session with Joey and David into a song cycle that became a movie script and then a graphic novel called Good Inn. He wrote the songs quickly and rented a piano to visualize it cinematically. Stephen Appleby, who did artwork for the Pixies' recent album Trompe l'Homme, illustrated the graphic novel.

Oh, uh, well, it does. There is a Pixies connection, actually. The idea was really born out of, uh, a demo session that Joey and I and David did together about 4 years ago in Los Angeles. And I, I wanted to be able to write a lot of songs quickly. And, uh, and so we would meet in the evening at Joey's or whatever, uh, at Joey's studio. But during the day, I would be writing some stuff, uh, actually rented a piano and everything. And, um, So I had this kind of song cycle idea, like kind of like a movie in my head, movie idea, you know, and that's really what was kind of, um, uh, informing some of the songs, you know. And so, uh, anyway, fast forward a couple years from that, uh, time period, and, uh, I've been involved in writing this movie script based on those ideas. And, um, the— this graphic novel is coming out as kind of a snapshot of those movie ideas as they were when the graphic novel was put together. And there's also a Pixies connection to the graphic novel in Stephen Appleby, who did some of the artwork on our last record, Trompe l'Homme, and just by sort of by coincidence has ended up working with me on that. So yeah, it's funny that there's all these kind of funny Pixies connections to that.
