Stem cells self-renew and produce differentiated cells, but their numbers decline with age. The question is whether you can run out of them entirely.
What about the stem cells? Do they multiply, or do they stop multiplying as you age?
The key or the feature of stem cells is that they make copies of themselves, and they make a copy of something that's a little bit more differentiated, which means gaining more function. So they always divide and try to replenish themselves. But as we keep growing and living, and the number just gets less and less, we lose them. So.
So we ever lose all of them.
One of the most important cell types is the mesenchymal stem cells. And when we were born, every 1 in 10,000 cells is the mesenchymal stem cells. When you reach your teenage years is one in a hundred thousand. When you reach your forties, it's one in four hundred thousand. And when you reach your eighties is one in two million. So you are running out of stem cells. So that's just a fact of life.
