A short YouTube transcript where the speaker (Joy Kong, MD) discusses the South American herb catawba as an alcohol alternative. The speaker describes its traditional use as an aphrodisiac and for mood/energy, compares it to maca and ginseng, and suggests stacking catawba with taurine to increase dopamine versus GABA to mimic alcohol effects without the next-day crash.

Known about for many, many years actually very, very popular in Brazil and South America. It's a herb called catawba. Now catawba is a herbal extract that's initially a lot of the ancient shamans and herbalists back in the day they used to prescribe it as an aphrodisiac so to increase libido and also to help with mood and energy a little bit like maca powder or like panax. Ginseng works in a similar way but is more so suited to increasing dopamine and then another one to combine that with taurine. So taking cat vava with taurine, taurine increases gaba, cat waba increases dopamine. Basically that stack there can help to replace alcohol. I know a number of guys that have sort of played around with that and they say it does a pretty good job. Like they don't get a come down, there's no crash, there's no toxicity. The next day you don't feel like garbage. It's pretty much like a win win.
