Joy Kong discusses inflammaging, the buildup of inflammatory factors with age, and whether plasma exchange can remove them and restore a younger biological state. Single drugs won't work because inflammation is too complex. Plasma exchange targets multiple pathways at once.

We do know that systemic inflammation plays a major role in aging.
That's the word, inflammaging.
Inflammation.
They're hand in hand.
Exactly. And I think that this is the so called longevity medicine attacks that inflammation. So how do we attack inflammation? Usually a single drug doesn't do the job because it's a very complex physiologic process. We know that therapeutic plasma exchange can remove these inflammatory factors very effectively and attacks inflammation on many different levels.
So inflammation is accumulating as we age, whether or not the person has any disease. So inflammation markers will keep arising even if the person looks perfectly healthy. But still they are in a state of decline. And that's one thing I think that's exciting about using plasmapheresis for longevity purposes is how to reverse that aging process and actually revert the body into a younger state. Right?
Correct. That's the goal. And by doing so, we expand the health span of people.
