A 2018 study gave stem cell injections to one knee and total knee replacements to the other in patients with steroid-related bone damage. After 12 years, 6 replaced knees needed revision surgery versus 1 stem cell knee. Joy Kong, MD, suggests stem cells as an alternative to surgery.
Chapters
There's a 2018 study of 30 people who are thought to need bilateral knee replacement because they had osteonecrosis, which is a rotting of the bones as a result of steroid use. They instead give one knee stem cell injections and the other knee total knee replacement. So 30 knees got stem cells and 30 knees got replaced. They followed these people for about 12 years. At the end of the study, out of the 30 knees that were replaced, six needed revision surgery, which means things were they had to go in and correct it. Whereas only one knee out of the 30 that got stem cell injections needed surgery at all. So next time, when you think about cutting your body open, getting surgeries, think about these numbers and do something that possibly is going to save your time, money, and health and happiness. So hope this helps you.
