A short excerpt from a YouTube video ("STOP Taking Supplements!" by Joy Kong, MD) where two speakers discuss overuse of dietary supplements. They describe consumers taking many overlapping products, overdosing (example given: vitamin D), and attribute this behavior to FOMO and marketing; one speaker says they now limit themselves to a few select supplements.
I think a lot of people are overdoing the supplements. They're taking way too many supplements.
Oh yeah, it's like total fomo. Yeah, it's like oh, I read about this and I read about this and then the doctor said this and before you know it, like, because I do that like when I coach people and they don't even realize like whatever. You're taking like eight different products, overdosing on vitamin D for the past 10 years, wasting their money, using like 10 different things, all that have the same mechanism of action. And so it's kind of like one of those industries where there's a lot of marketing of certain supplements. There's a lot of people talking about their stat and then people just take everything.
That's why I've switched from wanting to take a lot of supplements. The FOMO is a good description of what's going on from taking a lot to just very select few.
