What is the caveat of using cells from somebody that's already an adult? That means the person has gained more expression on the surface of the cells. And when you transplant the cells, then there's more chance for rejection. So the recipient may notice, oh, my goodness, this is from somebody else that's completely different from me. So if there's enough differences, then there's going to be a rejection reaction. That's why when we transplant bone marrow from adult to adult, we need to match. However, even if a person is perfectly matched, there's still a chance of rejection. But if you do not match umbilical cord blood with a recipient at all, there's less chance of rejection than perfectly matched adult bone marrow transplant. So that's how different they are.
