Biologists have identified 14 hallmarks of aging, but DNA damage may be the root cause. Telomeres shorten, genes misfire, and cells accumulate mutations over time, with most other aging signs flowing from this core problem.

The hallmarks of aging, why do humans age and so forth. It used to be about nine or so. Now there's about 14 different theories, what we call the biological hallmarks of aging. I think that a couple of them are more important than the others. That is telomeres, the DNA and gene expression is part of the epigenetic stuff that we're going to talk about. Those are by far, I think, the very important ones. And there are other scientists who think that the aging hallmark. This is Jan Hojamaker, brilliant scientist. His quotes are aging hallmarks are secondary consequences. And I agree with him. The other things that we saw on the hallmarks, I think, are various consequences. And what he talks about here in this slide is something that we, Cavinson and I agree with. It's accumulating DNA damage is the driver behind aging.
