Short transcript excerpt from a YouTube video explaining that follistatin is a protein that inhibits myostatin and activin, which normally block muscle growth. The speakers state that lowering these proteins via follistatin can increase muscle (lean mass) and reduce adipose tissue; they contrast mild therapeutic lowering with genetic myostatin knockouts that cause extreme muscle hypertrophy.
So Follistatin is this amazing protein that inhibits myostatin activin. And for lay listeners, myostatin actin usually end up blocking muscle growth. So as you get older, these proteins can increase in your body. So Follistatin lowers these two proteins allowing you to put on more muscle and in the process also reducing your adipose tissue or increasing your lean mass. And essentially. Right.
And there are other genetic condition where I remember seeing this little kid growing muscles like a bodybuilder, but the kid was like 6, 7 years old. That's from a genetic mutation, right?
You're absolutely right. That is correct. Back in the day when people were looking into Follistatin, one of the more popular pictures that would pop up is of a bull that's really full, like ripped beyond belief. That's when you have a full knockout of you just knock out all the myostatin in the body. So that's not what this is. This is very mild ish treatment. It's not knocking out myostatin active in your body, it's just lowering it.
