Chickens improve soil in ways tractors can't: they deposit nitrogen-rich manure precisely where they walk, scratch the top 1-2 inches without destroying structure, and eat weed seeds before they sprout. Plus, unlike machines, you can eat them.

Hey, where are you going? Where are you going? 3 things that chickens do to your soil that a big machine can't. Number 1: precise fertility. Everywhere a chicken goes, there's a high probability that it's going to poo. Chickens like to move around a lot, so you have this precise insertion of fertility, manure that's high in nitrogen being deposited on your pasture. And as you can see here, This used to be a moonscape, and because of us rotating poultry, we are able to create pastures for our ruminant animals. Number 2, bio-tillage. Chickens will till topsoil down to 1 to 2 inches, and it won't disrupt the structure of the soil. Very hard for a machine to do that. And number 3, weed seed consumption. Chickens will find those weed seeds and consume them before they get a chance to sprout. And then this miracle takes place, that they take those seeds and they transform them into food. And a bonus, number 4, you can't eat a machine, but you can eat a chicken. Chicken nuggets! Machines and human activity usually take from the land. Chickens, they add back. We have a free broiler chicken workshop within our school community at the end of the month. Hop on in there. Link's in the bio.
