In this vlog entry, the creator documents Day 6 of their Australian homesteading adventure, showing their sleeping area and noting an unexpectedly chilly night. They recount advice from mentors Jeff and Sam, who advocate a "ridiculous" rule of thumb for building soil: continuously add compost, mulch, and plant trees until the abundance becomes obvious to onlookers. The speaker contrasts this generous, nature‑mimicking approach with the more conservative, waste‑averse mindset common among American homesteaders, suggesting that many may be under‑applying organic matter if they fear appearing excessive.

ran into this little guy today without burning the place down. Hello everybody, it's day 6. This is my sleeping area. Who would have thought it got chilly in Australia? Uh, it was pretty cold. Jeff and Sam went over a rule of thumb on how much you should do something, and this is talking about how much compost you should add, how much mulch you should add, how many trees you should add. So you keep adding until somebody walks past you and says, "Isn't this getting a bit ridiculous?" That's when you know you have enough. That's really important to understand because, you know, American homesteaders, there's this, I guess, fear of being conservative, being tidy, and not being wasteful. And so you're kind of held back from this approach in the way that nature builds soil every year, an abundance of organic matter. So if your neighbor doesn't think you're crazy, you may be underdoing it.
