A compost pile stays hot because billions of microorganisms inside it are alive and working. They need the right moisture, a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio with enough nitrogen, and enough size for heat to build up. Get those conditions right and decomposition happens fast.
If it gets too wet, then the heat isn't allowed to build. And if it gets too dry, then the organisms don't have the moisture to do their thing. Because the heat comes from their bodies, comes from organisms procreating, from living, from birthing, from breathing, from dying. And we need to give them the conditions to build their lives, to thrive. And the conditions to thrive is those ratios, the carbon-nitrogen, high nitrogen in balance, the moisture in balance, and the right size. With that, we're set.
