In this solo episode of the Driving Impact podcast, host Katheline Jean‑Pierre shares the "Top 5% Method" for accelerating promotions, claiming that the right candidates can be promoted faster than 95% of their peers. Drawing on a decade of experience at Google, Deloitte, LinkedIn, Yahoo, and as a former gaming‑studio CEO, she frames promotion as a strategic campaign akin to a presidential race. She outlines five concrete tactics used by high‑performing professionals: (1) driving outstanding, over‑delivered results even during economic downturns; (2) becoming unforgettable to the promotion committee through likability and consistent value; (3) acting like a lawyer/detective by assembling data‑rich, persuasive promotion packets and pre‑emptively addressing objections; (4) managing up aggressively so managers can sell the candidate’s story up the chain; and (5) building sponsorship networks—senior leaders who champion the candidate in their absence, often forged through 20% side projects. Katheline also promotes her podcast’s growth, invites listeners to follow on major platforms, and directs them to her newsletter (drivingimpact.kit.com) for the full playbook. The episode emphasizes that promotions are not automatic rewards but strategic, influence‑driven outcomes.

Welcome to Driving Impact. Hello, hello, hello, hello, Driving Impact Collective, the top 5% method. And this is Katheline Jean-Pierre, your podcast host, and today I'm Super duper excited to talk about a topic that I'm very passionate about, because I've spent a lot of time digging in that topic. And throughout the years, people have asked me about it so much. How do you get promoted faster than 95% of your peers? That's a hot topic, certainly. And getting promoted faster than 95% of your peers, of course, it's not just hard work and smart work. In my own words, I wanna say that it's about running a campaign. It's like you're running a presidential race. Mic drop. Yes. So here's how I've seen top 5% achievers, those who are always at the top of the leaderboards, and those who are very skilled at navigating the corporate world and the corporate promotions. And that's stemming from my experience at, uh, different companies in tech and non-tech. I've spent 10 years at Google and then 3 years at Deloitte. And then 3 years at LinkedIn and 3 years at Yahoo across sales, marketing, and product, and also as the CEO of my former gaming studio. So let's get to it. Number 1, the top 5% achievers, to be able to get promoted faster than 95% of their peers, they drive outstanding results. There is no promotion conversation if you're not able to hit your KPIs. Most of the time. I've seen some exceptions, but you have to be good, and then you have to be beyond good if you wanna be on an accelerated trajectory. They overdeliver on their goals and the KPIs, even in times like when there's chaos or economic downturns. So that's number 1, driving outstanding result. Number 2, they make themselves memorable. What do I mean by that? So I hate the word personal branding because everybody talks about it so much, they are memorable, they are unforgettable. Also, it helps if you're likable and that people know you by your name. When I talk about people, I'm talking about the promotion committee, not just your manager, but your manager's peers. I've heard many times some VP would say, who's that person? I've never heard about them. Why are they on the list? So it's very important to be memorable, unforgettable, likable, and known by name. And also they're known for their repeated consistent accomplishments and the value they had to the team. And that's important. Before we go to number 3, I want to make a quick, quick announcement. So back to the agenda, how do top 5% achievers get promoted 95% faster than their peers? We talked about driving outstanding results. We talked about making themselves memorable, unforgettable, and also known by name for their repeated accomplishment and their value add. Number 3, and I love this one. They act like lawyers and detectives. These, the best top performers who rise quicker than the others are gonna build logical persuasive cases for themselves. They leverage data and evidence, and they have all the receipts, as we say, and then they verify, they verify, and they verify. They are not gonna trust promotion promises blindly. They wanna know all the details. Also, they ask the tough questions early. Who might object to my promotion in the promotion committee? How can I improve my promotion packet? So they are detectives. Number 4, they manage up hard. They prepare their managers to sell their story up to the chain of command, as we say, and they wanna make sure that their promotion goes through, that it's a no-brainer. They wanna make sure that they're on the top of the stack rank, because yes, there is a stack rank. Number 5, and that one is so, so important. I was able to turn around somebody's trajectory just by replying to their manager and also being part of the promotion packet and saying in all caps, I don't understand why this person is not already at the next level. So that was straight up senior endorsement. So what the top 5% achievers they build sponsorship networks, and that's the game changer. You have to find a creative way to connect with senior leaders who will know of your work and the quality of your work, and will talk about you on your behalf when you're not in the room, because this is the ultimate game changer. And this happens oftentimes in 20% projects. So additional projects that you take on, leaders, when they're working with you, they get to know your style, your accountability, your integrity. And in these conversations and those projects, then you can find organic sponsors and figure out how they could be supportive of you along the way. Again, promotions are not automatic. They're not guaranteed, and they're won through strategy, persistence, and mastering influence. So the top 5% achievers, they know how to navigate, and a promotion is not a prize. It's, it is a strategy. And if you wanna learn the full playbook that I've taught hundreds of high achievers, subscribe to drivingimpact.kit.com. And a little bit more about me, I've managed teams of 70 people, hundreds of people, 30 people across different organizations, across the US and Canada. And I, there's nothing I like more than getting someone promoted. So good luck. See you in the next solo episode. Welcome to Driving Impact.
