In chapter 17 of the "How to Work in Denmark" audiobook, the narrator explains Danish workplace customs surrounding birthdays and gifts. It is considered inappropriate to give a gift to your manager, as it would make them uncomfortable, and individual gifts to colleagues are also not customary. For significant life events such as a new baby or retirement, teams typically pool money to present a collective gift. Consequently, employees do not receive individual gifts either. On a personal birthday, the expectation is that the employee brings a cake for all coworkers to share, rather than receiving gifts.
