How Denmark Handles All That Rain 🌧️🇩🇰: Cloudbursts, Flooding, and Hidden Rivers

In this episode of the "How to Live in Denmark" podcast, host Kay Xander Mellish explains why Denmark experiences a great deal of rain and how its geography makes the country especially prone to flooding. She clarifies that October, not November, is statistically the rainiest month, though November feels wetter because of darker, colder skies and occasional freezing rain. Denmark’s low‑lying terrain, extensive coastline, and dense network of rivers and lakes mirror the flood‑risk profile of the nearby Netherlands. Recent climate change has intensified the problem, introducing more frequent and intense cloudbursts—locally called “skubrud”—which cause sudden, severe damage. In response, Denmark has launched a nationwide push to retrofit infrastructure, upgrade drainage systems, and redesign urban spaces to accommodate even greater volumes of water in the future.
