Esrum Kloster, a monastery north of Copenhagen, shows off medieval monk ingenuity: a water mill, a spark-free heating system for copying manuscripts, and hidden devils carved into the walls. The site now has a gift shop and serves its own beer.

Monks in Denmark? Monasteries in Denmark? Yes, and you can check one out at Esrum Kloster, which is just north of Copenhagen. You can see the abbey where the monks lived and prayed and sang. You can see the wonderful water mill that they built. It was in use for hundreds of years. The monks knew a lot about hydraulics. You can also see the heating system they devised to keep themselves warm through the Danish winter, but without sparks, because the sparks might set on fire these beautiful parchment rolls that they were working on. They spent most of their time copying the holy texts with quill feather pens. You can also see some of their wall friezes that survived. There's a little devil in this one. He's kind of hard to see, but he's in there. And afterwards, have a great picnic out front. Later, you can check out Esrum Kloster's gift shop, which has wonderful products from monasteries all over Europe, plus Esrum Kloster's own brand of beer.
