127. Failure or Success? You Choose Daily
15 Nov 2025 · 22 min
Episode 127 of the Leadership in a Nutshell podcast, hosted by Kenny Chapman, presents a motivational monologue arguing that individuals can choose success or failure daily by adjusting mindset and responses to external narratives. Chapman uses personal anecdotes (house purchase in 2006, army service, multiple businesses) to illustrate learning from results rather than labeling experiences as failures, and offers practical advice on self-care, commitment, sharpening skills (especially sales), and seeking wise counsel. The episode targets leaders and frontline workers and previews upcoming guest episodes.

Foreign Kenny Chapman here, your host of leadership in a nutshell, cracking the code of the driven mind that we have been gifted with. It's not a curse. I used to think for a lot of my life and career it was a gift and a curse. It is straight up a gift only. And Today in episode 127, I want to talk to you about failure or success. You choose daily. And I'm not going like super hypothetical on you. And hey, if things suck, then let's say it's success suck or whatever. But at the same time, I just want to, I want to take a moment and just have you step back for a second of where you are in the world, where you are in your career, where you are in your life, where you are in your relationships, where you are with your financial situation and just realize that we live in an absolutely fantastic time on this planet. And yes, you'll hear me talk about the human condition. You'll hear me talk about the number one addiction in the world, which is the addiction to suffering. You'll hear me talk about the scarcity versus abundance mentality when I wrote blue collar success laws and I was working on the things that had really led to the success that I live, breathe and feel. Not just from a financial standpoint or a freedom standpoint, or my incredible relationship with the lovely Christy, or the deep friendships that I have now developed and continue to develop. The relationships that I've, that I've parted from in my life based on abundance, not from scarcity. And we'll, you'll hear me talk about those things often throughout this podcast and in the several coming weeks, I am going to start guesting, having some people come on and share their different perspectives. But I want to keep the, the integrity of the show, if you will, from a perspective of this is a mindset opportunity. This is 10, 15, 20 minutes, depending on how long when did I get with you around you just taking a step back, Maybe you're on your way to the office, maybe you're taking a break, maybe you're on your lunch break, maybe you're on your way to go get your kids, maybe you just stepped out to take a walk around, around the building during the day. Whatever it is, I just want you to realize that it's okay, my friend, and you are okay. And as you continue to navigate what the world considers to be crazy and what the news considers to be horrific, and at the time I'm recording this, we're in the midst of watching the one of the greatest real estate booms turn into one of the greatest crashes in real estate time, depending on what you read. And oh my gosh, nobody's ever going to be able to buy a house and everybody's going to go broke. And we knew this narrative was coming. Like, it's all just. I'll call it bs and the reason I'll call it BS is because it's not founded on anything other than sensationalism. And so you and I, if you haven't purchased a new home in the last year, and if you have, I hope you bought something that you want and that you like. Like, I know the lovely Christy and I bought a home In December of 2006 in western Colorado, which was a little late to go into the Great Recession. And so we basically bought at the peak of the market. And it took us 10 years to get our money out of that house. But we bought a house that we wanted. We bought a house that we liked, and it worked for us. It served us. We ended up keeping it as a rental for a while. Whatever, it, it moves on. It doesn't matter. It's kind of like going back and thinking about, when were you successful because of a certain president? Now, I'm not going to get into politics here, but I just want you to think in episode 127, we're talking about failures or success, and you choose it daily. Now, the key there, my friend, is you choose it daily. The reason I mentioned the president situation is we go through election years, and yes, I vote, and yes, I have my beliefs and I have my perspective of the personal preference, I'll call it, that Kenny Chapman wants to see in the world that quite honestly best serves Kenny Chapman and those that he can serve. And so. And the greater good of what that perspective is. And so that's how I'm going to vote, and that's how I'm going to continue to, to carry forward. But over the course of history, when my candidate doesn't win, which has happened several times and throughout time, I can't look back and go, damn, I didn't succeed for those eight years. Oh, I didn't succeed when that person was president. Oh, man, my candidate won. I sure crushed it during that. So I just want you to just take a step back and go, hang on. So mortgage interest is going up a little bit. Okay, fine. It's been historically lows where, you know, you could almost not. I mean, there's no point in having money in savings because there was no interest to get on it. Now interest is coming back and everybody's freaking out. Like, have you known? Notice that everybody put that in air quotes. Freaks out about everything. We freak out when it's good because we're not sure if it's going to last. And we freak out when it's supposedly bad because it doesn't fit our personal preference of what we want it to be. That is the difference between choosing success and choosing failure on a daily basis. It's how much you allow your own individual ego and personal preference to interrupt reality. And I've talked about truth before that I say there's. There's my truth and there's your truth and then there's the truth. And I would say the truth is the universal truth, the spiritual, the soul, the overarching universal truth that God, universe, soul and spirit has created and what's happening. And if I want to go to a concert and it's an outdoor concert and it's raining, then I choose anger, frustration, suffering, because my personal preference is that it doesn't rain. Even though the universe has been around for billions of years and all these different kinds of things are going on on the planet and galaxies and all these different things, and it's really not that significant. The concert that I want to go to and whether it rains today or not really doesn't matter that much. But what does matter is how much suffering I bring into myself when that doesn't happen in the way that I want. So we think about business, we think about life and relationships. And I just want you to really take a step back here in today's episode and look at. We might be in for a bit of a ride for a while. And I've been talking about this for 18 to 24 months in our blue collar success group community that these. It can't continue forever. And as I've said before, history doesn't repeat itself. Human behavior repeats itself at a different time in history, and that's all we're dealing with. What does seem to repeat itself is the negative news. If things are good, it's negative. If things are bad, it's quote unquote bad, it's negative. So I want you to challenge yourself around where you're resisting and where you're clinging, like holding on to things, right? So I might be resisting the change of my sales department had better up their game. I might be resisting the fact that consumer debt on balance sheets and credit card debt is starting to maybe pile up again and maybe spending is going to go down a little bit and maybe money's not going to be as cheap or free for financing equipment and things in the home and different things like that. Perhaps clients are going to begin shifting shopping a little bit more. So my CSR team, my inbound call takers are going to have to up their game and sharpen their skill. Perhaps my outbound team is going to have to get better with scripting and really leaning into the value and the benefit. Perhaps I'm going to have to get good at business again. And I, I laugh lovingly because it's just been too easy for too long in a way. And I believe the day that we're born into this education experience called life, we sign up. And you and I signed up for this education. And yet when it's time for algebra or I don't know, some of you might have done calculus or I think I did geometry. Was geometry before algebra or algebra? Clearly, I don't know. I like profit and loss statements and balance sheets. How about that? That's my, that's my primary math functionalities, debits and cred. But no, seriously, when we look back at our schooling, quote unquote, formal schooling, it's like, oh yeah, I want that or I want this. And then you had these things called electives, right? So you had the, whatever they called them, you had to take your certain classes. And I'll talk about high school because I only had one semester of college. So in high school I did the, the whatever you had to do and then you got to take an elective or something. And then in college, okay, I'm going to be a computer scientist. Check. That was my major as a fresh in Colorado, Northwestern Community College, a little tiny college in northwestern Colorado. But that was short lived. And so then I thought at the time my formal education stopped because I was a failure. I failed in baseball because I didn't make it to the major leagues, which is why I was in college. Anyway, I failed in college because I didn't keep my grades up. I failed my family because I don't come from a long line of scholars. And I was going to go get a degree and I was going to do something meaningful. And so I took off and I went to Arizona and ended up getting in trouble and the whole deal. And then I signed up for one of the greatest educations of my life, which was the United States army. But it wasn't a formal school and so we kind of get these things. And I realized, well, hang on, wait, did I fail? And because I failed, I went in the army or did I succeed because I went in the army and now in Hindsight, in my 50s, I can look back on that 19 year old child that was making that decision and have empathy and compassion for him because he was doing the best that he could and he knew at some core level that he needed another level of outside motivation, influence, discipline, whatever it was at that time in his life. And it took him many years to really integrate and get indoctrinated into certain things. Some things came easy, some things didn't. Just like for all of us, right? But today when I'm talking about success or failure, it's your choice every day. The thing is, you're going to get fed failure. I almost titled this podcast A Million Ways to Fail. And when I was doing some research around the title, all I could come up with, or all Google wanted to serve me was A Million Ways to Die in the West. I guess it's some movie I haven't seen. So I thought, no, I'm going to stay away from that and just talk about failures or success. You choose daily, because that's true. But the reality is if you turn on the news or social media, you're going to see a million ways to fail. If you listen to your ego, you're going to see a million ways to fail. If you let the. What I call the language of the ego is comparison mindset, right? So the language of the ego is comparison. What is this person doing compared to me? That's my ego wanting to judge me. I'm better than that person or I'm not as good as that person. So that's my ego getting fed, creating separation one way or the other rather than I'm perfect exactly how I am living the exact life I'm supposed to, learning the exact lessons I'm supposed to check this succeeding exactly how I'm meant to. And that person, regardless of whether they're panhandling outside on the corner of the interstate or they are running a multi billion dollar company, they're succeeding exactly how they're supposed to because they're getting the education they need in this life. That's what I believe when I say that you choose every day. And my heart and my empathy and my compassion goes out to you in the business community as leaders. Many of you, well, everybody listening to this is a leader, regardless of. I know I've got some frontline team, I've got some salespeople and I know that as our audience grows, it's not just leaders, even though it's a title Leadership in a Nutshell. But the fact of the matter is, you are leaders. You're leading your communities, you're leading clients, you're leading other team members, you're setting examples. You're leading in churches, you're leading in community. And so we are all leaders. And what you think about matters and how you perceive yourself matters. And I want you to just kind of take a step back today and realize that you're exactly where you're supposed to be. And if the news needs something negative, they're going to find it. And when you find yourself up against what I. I call it the profitable rub. Sometimes some of the biggest challenges that we have, I just call it a little bit of a rub. It's. I got a pair of shoes that doesn't fit exactly right, and it's kind of rubbing my ankle. It's not enough to maybe create a full blister, or sometimes it might be. It's not enough to completely get rid of the shoes, although I probably should, because I've learned the lesson that I need to from that. But, nah, sometimes I put them on another day and wear them another day. And in life and in business, that's generally the profitable rub. If you're in sales and you're not embracing a proven technique, you're going to have a challenge, and it's going to rub until you decide to get it right and decide to commit. And ultimately, that's what it comes down to. And next week, I'm going to talk to you about commitment and where you're committed to lesser goals in your life. But this week, I just really wanted you to realize you have so many ways to choose success. You have so many ways to choose to be happy. And what you do matters, what you think about matters. And let me just write, like, think about these types of things, and I'm just gonna. I just want to hit you with some positive energy today, and I want you to seek wisdom and look for wise counsel. Look for people that have actual wisdom in your peer groups and your consultants and your coaches. If things aren't going the way you want, change courses. It's okay. Sometimes that's the difference. Hey, college wasn't working for me. I changed courses. I got in trouble. That wasn't working for me. I changed courses. I went in the Army. That wasn't working for me. I've been in nine businesses in five different industries, my friend, and right now, I'm only in the coaching and training best practices industry. I mean, that. That is it. I love podcasting. This is part of what I do is sharing positive information in coaching and training and helping us unleash a greater level of consciousness in the mind. That's what I'm committed to. And so don't think that your way is the only way. Sometimes other people have some value. And even when it comes from the most odd places. Be mindful, pay attention what's happening around you. There are certain things that happen that you just discount. Your reticular activating system in your brain just kicks it out. Doesn't have value. Doesn't have value. Be mindful of those things. Remember the bigger goal. I wanted to be successful in my life, whatever that meant. At 19 years old. I didn't really want to go in the army, but that was a path to getting out of the situation I was in in life or either moving towards something or we're moving away from something. I was moving more away from my current situation at that time to go in the service than I was moving toward going into the service. Other people join the service a hundred percent to go into the service and they're going to be special Forces and they're going to go jump and do get 82nd Airborne and all the different things that. That wasn't my particular path. Here's one I want you to really just lock in on. Your desire for success must be greater than your fear of failure. And you've heard me talk about failure and I hesitated to even use it in this title at all because I don't believe in failure. I'll just remind you of that. I only believe in results. Failure is a label of the mind and it means to me I didn't get what I set out to get that I thought I wanted. The universe had a different plan for me. So I got exactly what I needed. I might just not have gotten what I wanted or what my ego wanted. So your desire for success and that end goal, that longer term goal must be greater than your fear of getting drugged through the mud a little bit, if you will. And so don't give in to being short sighted. Don't give in to lesser goals, which I'll talk more about next week. Make sure you're paying attention to your own self care, your rituals, what you're putting in your body, both food, drugs, alcohol, nicotine. Just be mindful of those things. I'm not going to beat a drum on that. Be mindful of your schedule. I've recorded in the past. I used to resist having a schedule and thinking that that was not good for me. Now I embrace a schedule Even though I've traveled, gosh, what have I done? I traveled nine weeks this summer. I've been on the road way more than I've been home. But I've embraced a schedule on the road and it blows my father in law's mind. He's like, are you working on the road? Yeah, I work wherever I'm at. That's what I do. Because we live in a world that allows that today. And so I just want you to be mindful of where are you choosing failure when you don't have to if you're getting caught up on certain things? Oh, I bought my home four years ago and now I've lost all this money on it because. Because the market saw you never had that money anyway unless you sold it like it was a fictitious elevated number that your ego got attachment to and went, holy crap, can you believe our house is worth that much? It was worth that much for two minutes because it was overvalued probably and there were some people that might have paid for it then, but you would have had to go replace it in an overvalued market. So really it didn't exist. It was a fictitious figment of your mind in which your ego attached to and now you're creating pain. So where else are you doing that? Where else are you doing that? Where? Damn. It's been so easy. We haven't really focused on sales training. We haven't if you're a blue collar member. We haven't really been participating in the weekly trainings because we've just been too busy, too much going on. It's time to sharpen the saw, my friend. It's time to dive back in. It's time to learn something. It's time to grow again. It's time to improve, embrace your success. Because every single day you get the choice. Failure, success, failure, success. Now when you get to the end of today and you got some results, you didn't want to check your ego and go, well, am I going to choose failure? Did today suck? Was today horrible? Did I fail today? Or did I get some damn good lessons that I really needed to have? I wouldn't have signed up for those this morning, but God, I'm glad I got those. That's what it's all about, my friend. I'm proud of you. I love you. I'm so honored that you joined me here in this time space energy that we get to share. I'm going to continue bringing this to you. I am going to start having guests on in the next several weeks. And let me know if you have a guest that you would like me to to have on the show. I'll have some industry specialists. I'll also have people outside of the industry because I just want different perspectives as we talk about our driven mind and how we can continue to choose empowerment, love, success, peace, bliss as we create radically successful lives and live in happiness. That's what it's all about until we talk, my friend. Make it a better than fantastic day. Episode 127 failure or success? You choose Daily. I'll talk to you soon. Thanks, Sat.
