15 Nov 2025 · 16 min
Kenny Chapman uses his house move to explore life and business lessons: embrace simplicity, discard what no longer serves you, accept that change is hard work, and remember your why. He argues less is more and gratitude matters when you're in transition.

Foreign. Hey, welcome back to the show. I'm your host, Kenny Chapman. I'm super pumped that you are here with me for episode 143, moving lessons for Life and Business. So the lovely Christy and I are in the middle of it. Well, I would say we're on the tail end of it actually. And we have been moving and I just think about the different things that happen in life, the different things that we create and bring into our life experience to learn from and to grow from. And moving is a very good test of character, of will, of relationship, of all these different things. And today I just wanted to jump in and share how you can apply some of these things that I've been thinking about, journaling, about meditating on over the last several weeks when it comes to your life and your business. I've shared some of this with my high level clients and today I just wanted to jump in and have a quick conversation. I don't have these listed like numbered for you, but I just want you to open your mind and think about a few things maybe a little bit differently when it comes to, you don't have to, you don't have to go create a different physical reality. Like the lovely Christy and I, we, we're building a new home. And as the market is shifting and changing a little bit, we made a conscious decision that we were planning to sell our home originally when our new home is done. And we decided instead to move into a condo that we already own, that we remodeled earlier this year and just downsize a little bit and hunker into the condo and just focus on building the house and get top dollar for our home that we had been living in. So all makes sense. All, you know, okay, cool, it's a good business decision, it's a good life decision. And then we get into the moving and the different things and I want you to think about, you don't have to physically change your location to get some of these lessons and to apply them to your business, to apply them to your life, to apply them to relationships, to finance, to the way that you see the world, to the way that your culture and your business responds to ever changing market conditions and different things that take place. So here we go. Grabbing, grab a piece of paper and something to write with. And if you're driving, just make a mental note to come back or check the show notes on, on this episode. First thing, embrace simplicity. It sometimes it takes a physical change to really realize how much complexity we allow into our lives, into our consciousness and you know, you know, I'm considered a simplifier when it comes to multipliers and simplifiers in the world. I love to grow businesses, I love to multiply things, but I'm a better simplifier than I am a multiplier. Meaning that I enjoy taking complex things, process, strategy, thought, you know, let's say thinking tools and make them better. That's why I like working with high level individuals one on one or more importantly in group settings to where people can learn from each other. And that's why all my high end work now I do in group settings. And so I think about embracing simplicity with a move you're able to really just lean into. How does this affect me? How do I want to use this moving forward? Tied to that. Write down less is more when it comes to thinking about your life situation. When it comes to thinking about your business situation, less is more when you know, in business we want to make sure that we keep the main thing, the main thing. And sometimes we create too many things around the main thing and we can lose sight of that when we think about our own personal situation or complexity of relationships, different things like that. Sometimes we think more is better. Just a few quality relationships oftentimes is really powerful. Just a few profitable activities at the business that you do really, really well. Being the best at what matters most really can change the game for you. So we want to focus on doing less, more and less is better, my friend. Here's another great one. Go through your crap that can be framed a lot of different ways, right? Just go through your crap. Meaning if you're in a funk, go through through it. If you're learning something that's challenging you, go through it. If you're having different challenges in your life, go through it. If you, if you need to clean out your closet, if you will, go through your crap. And my God, did we learn some of that. Going through the process of getting ready to move and downsize tremendously. We moved into a place that's less than half the size of what our, what our previous living situation was. So we went through our crap. And it reminds me of the lovely Christie last week. She said, you know, one of the things about moving is you go through and mentally and physically touch everything that you own. And it really hit me and I went, man, you know, that's true. Where else in life do I need to go through and mentally touch what I own? And when I say what I own, I'm talking about my belief systems, I'm talking about my programming I'm talking about my conditioning. I'm talking about how I run business. I'm talking about cash flow. I'm talking put my hands on that, put my mental hands on every aspect of my life and go through my crap. That's what it's all about. So make sure you're doing the same. And then once you've gone through your crap, get to the next thing, and that's take out the trash. Sometimes we have our garbage overflowing in our mind. One of the reasons I'm a major proponent of meditation, I get to take out the trash every day, multiple times a day. If you practice cognitive behavior therapy, where you snap a rubber band on your wrist, or I teach my clients to listen, to slap your wrist and create that change of consciousness, that awareness that you bring to your mind, and you say, cancel that thought. I am free. Then you take a deep breath. You hold your head up high like you've got a string pulling through the center. And chin down, breathe in, breathe it back out. Back to center. Bam. Just like that. CBT turns to btc. That's what we really want to focus on. Take out the trash. Clear your mind. That garbage bin overflows, and then it starts spilling out on the floor. If it's process, if it's business, it starts spilling into other areas. Some of your own crap starts impacting your leadership team. Your leadership team starts impacting your front line. That's where it's at. Make sure you take out your crap in with that. The next thing. Let go of what no longer fits or is in style. Moving is a great opportunity to go through that closet, as I mentioned before, and start taking things out and trying them on and go, well, does this really fit me anymore? Sometimes too big. Sometimes it's too small. Sometimes I just haven't worn it in a long time. Sometimes maybe it's out of style. And it doesn't mean that you didn't have good intention. It doesn't mean that you didn't do it. Buy it for a reason. Wear it for a while for a reason. When it comes to clothes, same is true with a belief. Same is true with some conditioning. Doesn't mean it didn't work for you. The question is, is it still working for you? And that's where the power, that's where the magic, that's where it's all at. So again, sometimes it could just be out of style. It doesn't fit anymore for you. It doesn't work. Sometimes it physically just flat out doesn't fit. Maybe my compensation plan does not fit my business anymore. Blue Collar recently did our compensation equation class. Maybe I need to get in with my coach and look at. At the scorecards tied to the compensation plans and see, maybe my old process doesn't fit. Just like a shirt that doesn't work for me anymore. Maybe the color is different. Maybe it doesn't fit the way that it did when I first got it right. Think about how that shows up for you. The reality is, write this down. You change, so change your stuff, and that's okay. Your business changes, so you change it. Sometimes your business changes faster or differently than team members can change. It's okay. You know, there's that old adage that's been said for years in the business world, change your people or change your people. And that's a reality. You got to change your team and change your team, right? You got to change yourself and change yourself. And ultimately, that's where we've really got to look at the things. And so when it comes to the moving analogy and the metaphor that I'm sharing with you here today, I've got some things that, you know, I've changed since I wore those or since I got those things in my life. Maybe I don't have that hobby anymore. I. I changed. So it's okay to change my stuff. The same is true for you. Relationships, finance, business, team training, coaching. That's what it's all about, my friend. Next thing. It's a lot of work. Oh, my God. Is it a lot of work when you move, right? When you physically move locations, when you go through everything that you've got? Here's the reality. It's a lot of work to change. It's a lot of work to move, move your mindset. It's a lot of work to move your conditioning to move your thought process, to move your thinking, to move your team. It's a lot of work. And sometimes you just get to the end. Remember several days I told Christy and we were super blessed because we were moving into this condo that we already owned. And so it was like, man, we were able to do it on our own time. We didn't have to wait until closing day to try to line up everything exactly perfectly. And we didn't hire movers for this move because we just, you know, thought, well, we're not moving that much stuff. The home we sold pretty much furnished. The clients that bought it, the clients, the buyers wanted our home set up the way that we set it up, with almost all of our furniture left in place. And so we're like, it's not that big of a deal. We'll just move. And then load after load after load, going to Goodwill, going to the Humane Society drop off, going to storage, going to the condo, back to the house. It's like, man, is this ever going to end. It's a lot of work, and that's true of everything that has any real meaning in life. It's going to be work, but it's good work, it's positive work, it's productive work. And it's progress. Remember progress, not perfection. That is what makes it work. It seems like it'll never end, but it will. And it will at the exact right time. When you've put in the right amount of of work, next thing, it's exciting. It's a new leaf, it's a new chapter. So get clear on that. Have some fun with it. It's something new, it's something different. The lovely Christy and I were talking about, we're excited we're moving into this small space together. I mean, it's the smallest place we've lived since we got together, in spite of a six month motorhome trip where we spent six and a half months in a 42 foot motorhome, 40 foot motorhome double slide. And we ended up in a 42 foot quad slide. And we didn't do the long trip in that one. We did the long trip. We got that coach. So we've lived in smaller spaces for six months, but this is an eight, nine, ten month play here. So we've never lived in a space this small. It's exciting, it's different. We'll learn about ourselves, we'll learn about each other, we'll learn how to simplify, and then we'll move into our, our bigger home that we're building. Right? But you know, the world talks about, oh, everything's negative or it's this frustrating or it should suck. No, it shouldn't suck. Life's amazing. It's supposed to be amazing. It's meant for you to live in love and joy and peace and bl as you navigate the challenge. And the suck and the pain and the suffering, that's where it all comes together and it makes the magic of life lean into it. It's an exciting time. Allow it to be an exciting time. Right now we've got the calendar on our side. We just rolled over to 2023. Let's have a blast. Let's get out there and learn. We'll see what the economy does. We'll see what buyer behavior does. We'll see what team members do, and we'll enjoy the process as we roll. Next thing, lean into the gratitude as well. You know, it's a new leaf, it's a new chapter. Be excited about being grateful. What an incredible opportunity that if you've got some messes to clean up, if you've got some trash to take out, if you have some pain to deal with, if you're conditioned for suffering. I've talked for a long time, you know, as a previous addict of drugs and alcohol, I think about the biggest addictions are tied to suffering. And we create suffering for ourselves and then for others because we're not allowing ourselves to be happy. Turn the suffering into fun this year. Enjoy the process. If you've got some stuff to take out, hey, be grateful that you've got it. You get to play the game another day. You woke up this morning, you're listening to this, you might be watching this depending on your platform. It's an amazing day. Make sure you lean into that. But it takes reconditioning. It takes thinking and, and doing some journaling and doing some meditation and doing some reflection. Make sure you're doing these things. And last and certainly not least, my friend, remember your why? Countless times during this physical move that Christy and I did, it was like, okay, let's remember why we're doing this. It's a big pain in the ass right now, but it's going to be worth it. And how many times, if you look back at your life, your relationships, your financial situations, your business or businesses, your leadership style, the different things you've learned in your career, man, this sucks for a minute, but it's going to be worth it. And that's what I want you to remember, my friend. It is always worth it. The universe has a plan for you. I personally don't believe in mistakes. I don't believe in failure. I don't believe God, universe, soul and spirit makes mistakes. I think that there's a platform created for our own education, and sometimes we create those platforms. Christy and I decided we want to build a new home. We decided we wanted to sell our home. We decided we wanted to move into our condo to park some cash and get ready for that next adventure and enjoy the process. In the way, does it not mean we'll have challenge? Of course we'll have challenge. But that's going to be what it's all about. At the end of your life, you're going to go, hey. I look back and I had experiences, have some great experiences in 2023. And sometimes we have to step back and remember why we're doing all this. For me, it's about elevating consciousness. It's about making the world a better place through people just like you. I want to thank you so much for spending a little time with me here today. Episode 143, Moving Lessons for Life and Business. Do me a favor. Shoot an email to somebody about this episode. Text somebody that's going through some stuff that could use just a moment of time to step back and look at it a little different, differently. I'm your host, Kenny Chapman. Until we talk, make it a better than fantastic week. I'll see you next time. Thank you.
