Foreign. Hey, my friend, welcome back to leadership in a nutshell where we're cracking the code of that driven mind that you and I have. I'm your host, Kenny Chapman. This is episode number 40. I'm super excited about episode 40 where I'm going to talk about unique advantage. This is the third episode I've talked about different unique advantages you have today. It's about being due to my purpose. So I want you to think about that for a moment if you know there's, there's all kinds of great stuff in sales and sales psychology around the word because. And maybe I'll even record an episode. I, I recorded a training years ago, one of our instant meeting maker trainees trainings for the trades that we serve over the blue collar side of things that I do. And it was called the power of because. And you know, there's all kinds of different studies that have been done around the word because just validates so many things, moves people to take action, all these different things. And today I want you to think about your unique advantage being due to your purpose. And so what if when every time you think about it or somebody asks you like, hey, why did you do that? And I say, well, due to my purpose, I am doing this, that or the other. Or you were able to say, because it's my purpose that I have this and that happen. It's all about unique advantage. Right? And so when we think about the last three episodes, including this one together, we dove into kind of mindset and really being able to identify and grow our growth mindset over our fixed mindset. Then we looked at how we manage the gaps that we live in every time we set a goal and create goals and we want to manage those gaps. Now today we've got to wrap it up with a unique advantage around your purpose. And the most successful people in the world, in my opinion, are directly tied to their purpose. I'm currently writing another book that'll be out sometime probably late, second quarter, early third quarter of 2021. And it's about purpose guided leadership. It's about creating companies and leading teams that are based on your own unique purpose. And so today's episode is really just helping you to take a step back and go, wait a minute, what if there is a reason behind everything that I do? What if there's a why behind the behaviors that I continue to execute that maybe might not serve me at the highest level? Maybe I don't want to continue to do however those look. And at the end of the day, it Always comes down to a strong enough why. So you'll hear me talk a lot around who before how, but after why? Because I believe that why is the secret sauce. I believe that why is the gift that keeps you going. I believe that why is the fuel in your gas tank of life? I believe when you know why you're here, why you do what you do, why you want to do what you want to still do, why you want to accomplish certain things, why you want to be around certain people, why you want to earn the income that you want, all of those different things is all tied to a strong enough why. And if we don't have a strong enough why, then we don't have the emotional connection. And if we don't have the emotional connection, then we're just kind of flailing along through life and just getting bounced around like a pinball in the pinball machine. And we don't want that. We want to live the life of our dreams. We want to step into our next level of greatness. But how am I going to know what that is if I don't know why I want what I want? And so today, I want to reinforce an exercise that you may or may not be aware of. If you have done it, I would encourage you to be like myself and be mindful of the power of this exercise when you continue to use it in your life and. And different people teach it in different ways. I was originally exposed to this exercise by Dean Graziosi at a mastermind event that I was at that Dean was at as well, and he talked about the seven levels deep exercise. And so when you think about it, it really comes down to seven whys. And I want you to kind of just take a step back for a moment and think about something you want to accomplish or something that you want to do or something that you want to have. And then I want you to kind of embrace this whole concept around why. Like, why is that important? Why do you want to do that? And so it could be as simple as, you know, well, I want to be successful. Okay, number one, that's super general. And I'll tell you right now, the more specific you get, the better result you get. But you're going to find something. And I encourage you to leave a comment here. Shoot me an email. Kennyennychapman.com if I can help you with this exercise. If you want to share your results, I would be honored by that. If you would share this episode with somebody that might be able to help serve them or put it on social media for me, I would be very grateful because the seven levels deep, or the seven whys or whatever you want to call this thing, it's about emotional attachment. And so many of us are taught to stay away from emotion that when we say things, we just go, I want to be successful. I want to go do this thing. Okay, cool. Well, then why do you want to do that? Well, you know, I want to be successful. Why? Well, so I can show that, you know, show other people that they can be successful, too. Okay, well, why do you want to show other people that they can be successful? Well, I want them to know that, you know, they're not different than anybody else and that they actually can have, you know, their cake and eat it, too, so to speak. Okay, then why do you want them to know that they're not the exception and they're not, you know, different than anybody else, and they can have their cake and eat it, too, huh? Well, because I really want people to know that there's a higher level of life available to them and that, you know, they. They can really live with more passion and more fulfillment. Now here we are four y's in and understand the emotional shift that's beginning to take place. So when this exercise is done effectively, somewhere between, you know, question three and four and certainly getting into five, you start diving into a little bit deeper emotion and deeper level. Now, the other thing that's important is that, you know, if you get through all seven and you still don't feel like you've got a super deep emotional connection, just keep going. I've seen this done as deep as. As 11 or 12 questions, but ultimately, you know, one of the examples I was exposed to recently was somebody said this exact thing like, well, I just want to be successful, and went through all these different things. And after why? After why? After why? Their answer was, I want my kids to have an example that somebody in our family didn't give up on themselves. Now, think about that for a minute. The original question is, well, I want to be successful. Why do you want to be successful? Well, so I can show other people that they can. And you start going through that, and then this individual that will remain nameless ultimately got to a point of where it was emotionally tied to her children and them having an effective example that she was breaking the socioeconomic bonds that had been created, Barriers, chains that had held them back as a family unit from. For decades or generations. And holy smokes, my friends. And you go, well, Kenny, I don't know. It seems A little bit weird. Here's the reality. There's no wrong way to do this exercise. But I want you to think about when you really dive into your unique advantage being about your purpose and go, well, due to my purpose, I want other people to be successful. And guess what? Maybe it's part of my purpose to be successful myself in order to show other people where their success lies. Maybe part of my purpose is to build companies that allow people to execute their own unique abilities and grow with our organizations to be able to maximize their own opportunities and live the dream life that they once only thought was a vision or a dream, if you will, as you go through this exercise. And it's important to slow down and take a step back because, you know, here we are rocking and rolling in 2021 and many people have their goals and had their budget set and know what your KPIs are for the year and what you want to go out in the world and accomplish and all these incredible great things. And that's amazing. I love every bit of it. But I'm here to tell you, psychologically it's one thing that it's cool and it feels good to set goals. But, but if there's no emotion tied to it, the odds of you accomplishing what you want are minimized greatly statistically that you fall off the curve if you don't have emotional tie. And so I now understand that, you know, if I would have known this exercise way back when, when I started becoming successful, when I would have got down to lower levels of 6, 7 of the whys, like, well, I want, I had a goal. I wanted to become a millionaire. Well, why? Like, you know, now that it's happened, I don't, I don't have a, an attachment to it. And it's not even that, that much of a, it's not that much money any in today's world. It's not that big of a net worth. And don't judge me if you're, if you don't agree with me. Well, judge me if you want. I guess that's your, that's your prerogative if you want to judge. But all I'm saying is, you know, it's, it's not the same as, quote, millionaire. Well, guess what? Why did I want to become that? Well, so I could have freedom. Why did I want freedom? So I could choose the life that I want? Why I would get all the way down to. Because I grew up wearing secondhand clothes and shopping at, at secondhand stores and not going on vacations and not being able to have nice things and not driving cars that I wanted to drive. Yeah, I drive luxury sports cars now. Why? Because it's important to me. Why? Because I get an emotional tie. Why? Because I feel successful. Why? Because I like to go fast. Why? Because you can go to all these different things and guess what? It's okay to want what you want. Just embrace it and know why you want it. That's the problem. I don't need some philosophical, you know, zen thought out, amazing, cool answer that's going to get me into the next level of Gates of Heaven because, well, I drive a sports car because my. Why is that? Well, it's a hybrid. Did I mention that? It's a hybrid? And, and therefore I'm doing the universe good, you know, by not emoting whatever emotion or not emoting the emissions of my car using less fuel, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I would tell that story. I remember when I said, oh, well, I drive a hybrid now and I'm trying to offset my carbon footprint from when I drove around the country and 40 foot bus motorhomes, right here's the reality. It's okay to want what you want. And you can judge me for wanting what I want. I'm 100% okay with that. Why do I want it? Sometimes it's okay to want it because I want it. But it's better when you go deeper and go, okay, cool, then why is it that I want it? And eventually, my friend, you're going to get down to a level that has an emotional tie. And when you have an emotional tie, you create emotional freedom. And when you create emotional freedom, you get to enjoy, you get to live in bliss, you get to operate with hope. You get to just be a part of the ever so incredible existence of humanity on this planet, in this life together. And it is super fun. That's what it's all about. Your unique advantage is due to your purpose. And you find your purpose of a specific thing that you want by going seven levels deep with why. I'm Kenny Chapman, your host of leadership.
