Foreign hey my friends, welcome back to leadership in a nutshell for home service professionals. I'm your host, Kenny Chapman. I'm super pumped as I usually am when I get to connect with you. And today, you know, in home service we, we've got a lot of models for leadership and a lot of different things. And today I really wanted to jump in with our episode entitled the Myth of Sacrifice. And most of us grow up with a lot of different mindsets around sacrifice and scarcity and abundance and different things like that. And at the time I'm recording this, I have recently done a full on webinar training for my membership over at the Blue Collar Success Group. And I wanted to share some of that presentation with you here today. Just kind of talk through some of this and maybe spark some thoughts for you because you know, we have this belief that it's all about sacrifice and I've got to wait and I've got to think about lack and scarcity in order to win. And I want to challenge that today. So let's just jump in right now and let's talk about a competition that is going on in your mind. There's a major competition. We think about competition in the marketplace and this company and that home service business and these, you know, this person's able to acquire and recruit better. And there's all this competition that we kind of have a tendency to think about. I want you to think about the predominant competition today and that is the competition between scarcity mindset and abundance mindset. Massive, massive competition. And it's happening in your mind right now as we speak. You're thinking about, oh my gosh, what about this? And you're thinking about, man, I'm super excited or what could we do here? There's possibility, there's optimism, there's fear, there's lack. These different things are coming in, right? Here's one thing I want you to realize, my friend. Mindset matters now more than it ever has, probably. Right? And you know, there's all kinds of cumulative fear and negativity in the world in a lot of ways. And if the market's good, it's about when the market's going to be bad. And if the market's bad, it's about how much worse it's going to get. If there's a pandemic, it's about how many people are going to die. If there's a vaccine, it's about how it's not going to work. And when we start realizing that most of the world lives their lives with a scarcity mindset, we're able to perhaps take a look and free ourselves a little bit in order to make some decisions and choices about how we want to operate as leaders. Because all the things I just talked about, our team members are being assaulted non stop all day, every day with the same type of things and the same types of challenges. Right. And so I need to be really aware of kind of what the messaging is, what the conversation is that's taking place. So I want to today just kind of break these two down for you. Scarcity mindset and abundance mindset. So when we start with scarcity mindset and we think, okay, what does that mean? Well, there's the fact that there's the necessities saved for future progress, they're running out. And there's a zero sum game. So meaning, you know, I make my home and our office headquarters in the Phoenix, Arizona area. And in Phoenix people have been saying we're running out of water. They've been saying we've been running out of water since as long as I can remember coming here with grandparents as a child. And now we're what I think the fourth tied for the fourth largest city in the United States, maybe moving up toward third and yet we're still going to run out of water. And that's going to be it. And this zero sum game mentality that we bring to business is that somebody has to lose in order for me to win. And I want you to think about that for a minute in your own business and with your team members, with your salespeople. So certainly if I'm going to sell an AC system, then I'm going to get that AC system particular that, that specific one instead of another competitor. So certainly there's, there's a component there. However, there's this bigger global belief system that if I get that system then that means my business is going to grow and everybody else has to fail. If I'm going to win, then people have to lose. I'm not talking about winning the deal, I'm talking about the bigger picture. When we think about, you know, do I have to win every battle to win the war type of a situation, if you will. And I don't like the negative connotation of, of the fight anyway. I'd rather collaborate than compete. That's one of the reasons I'm, I'm about to start hosting guests on my show. I'm going to have competitors of blue collar on my show here. So we can all just collaborate. Everybody that's Doing something positive for the industry. I want to play with them. Some people choose blue collar, some people choose all kinds of other things. That's okay. It's about abundance and I want you to think about that. So today I want you to really give some honor about your, your scarcity mindset around what has been the source of it. Where has that come from? When we think about conditioning, I've talked about in the past with beliefs. You know, we have parents that kind of help form our core belief systems, we have our peers that kind of help us with emotional skill belief systems and how we kind of relate and then we have previous experience belief systems that form from kind of what, what works and what doesn't work and how some of those types of things might show up. Right. So when we think about, we all have scarcity and abundance mindset, it's not about eliminating one and only, embracing the other. It's more about embracing what you really want and how you're going to lead your team. So, you know, when we think about what are, what are some examples? Well, work hard, save every penny, postpone your success at all costs. You know, you gotta wait to feel good or feel secure. And there's what I call layover mentality, which I'll talk about that a little bit more here shortly. But layover mentality is really about, you know, I coined this phrase when Christy and I were traveling by plane, I mean, 20 weeks a year or so when we were always in an airport. And it seemed like so much of our life we were in an airport waiting to go somewhere else. I spent a lot of my career in small town western Colorado and we had to go to Denver to connect just about anywhere. I spent so many hours of my life in dia, it's not even funny. And I felt like that was how a lot of people live their lives. I was in dia, in on a layover, waiting for the rest of my life to continue, waiting to have the experience of what I wanted, waiting to get to the event, waiting to get to the coaching situation, waiting to get to the client, whatever it was. I was stuck in that airport on a layover. How is this showing up in your life? Where are you implementing layover mentality of waiting for that. We'll talk about that a little bit more in a minute. So when you think about subconscious, does it ever tell you, hey, don't be too successful? You ever see how that shows up? Perhaps like from peers, parents, previous experience, like you kind of need to be silently successful a little bit, right? One of the things that also reinforces our scarcity mindset is how we handle our past. So there's three things I want you to think about when it comes to our past. Number one, honor. Number two, love. Number three, release. So I've got to honor my past, which means I respect it, I've got to love it, which means I have deep affection for it. And then I've got to release it, which means set it free. And trust me, my friends, I've done some things in my life that I am not proud of. I've operated as a leader in things that I could absolutely embarrass myself about. And, and some of you may have been around when some of those types of things happened. Right? But at the end of the day, one of my mentors taught me, and I'm so grateful that they did that. You must love your past to create a bigger future. I tried to out create my past, I tried to out produce my past. And I went, oh, man, I've got to lean into it, I've got to love it. To become a better leader, to become a better coach, to become a better trainer, to become a better podcast host, whatever that is. Right? So those are the things that kind of build up and how we shift from this scarcity mindset that so many of us have been kind of plagued with to now we look at the abundance. When I think about an abundance mindset, how does that show up? Well, then I'm able to come from a place of everything is getting exponentially bigger. There's endless room for growth, there's an opportunity for everybody here. That's why I want to have competitors of blue collar on the show that I host. That's simply a leadership in a nutshell for home services. This isn't about blue collar. That's a separate entity from this show. This is about how can we all play together and help this entire industry level up and raise up. Right? That's my abundance mindset taking action. Right. So how do we sabotage abundance? Let's think about that. If I know that everything's getting expend exponentially bigger and there's endless room for growth is how I want to think. Well, that gets sabotaged. How? Well, let's say perfectionism, limiting beliefs or negative thinking. Right. We think about confirmation bias and how that might show up. And what do I mean by confirmation bias? Well, take a religious situation. If I have confirmation bias, I'm just going to my church and I'm talking to the people that believe the way that I believe. And I'm not questioning anything. If it takes a perspective of a pandemic, then I'm only watching one set of news. I'm only thinking about one thing. If you take politics, I'm only watching the channels that reinforce my own belief. It's confirming my own bias that I have in the world and that sabotages abundance. In order to have abundance, I've got to look at all perspectives and I've got to recondition and challenge my own beliefs. Okay, so here's what I want you to do. I want you to write some things down and I'll put these in show notes for you so you can go back and look at these. Number one, what are two things that I was taught about money and success that might still be running a subconscious program that could possibly be holding me back? Okay, so write those down. I've got them in show notes here. So if you're driving, don't worry about this right now. Come back and do this later. And I would love to hear from you. If you email kennykennychapman.com I'd love to hear some of your thoughts around this so I can help you on future episodes expose some of these things. Not calling you out, of course, but what are two things taught about money? So what are some examples? Oh, money doesn't grow on trees, Kenny. You can't buy happiness. Kenny. You can't live where you want and have the income you want. Those are limiting beliefs that were created into my subconscious. Programming number two, again, I will put these in show notes. What do I really want in my life that I'm minimizing, justifying, or making excuses for not doing or having? We all have a tendency to go, oh, you know, I don't have that because I can't do that because I'm not built that way. So, like that person, whatever that is. Examples for me was, I was afraid to leave Grand Junction. I really wanted to leave. I was minimizing it. I was justifying it. It was time for me to leave another one for me. I needed to stop drinking to have the next level of my life. So a long time ago, I quit drinking and I just completely changed my life. But I was justifying, I was making excuses. I'm a driven entrepreneur. All driven entrepreneurs drink. I have all these. All these limiting beliefs that I was justifying, minimizing, and making excuses for. Same is true with fantastic relationships or attracting team members as leaders or whatever. How. How are those showing up for you? Number three, where is that quote layover mentality showing up for me and what am I waiting for? Right? I talked about the layover mentality. Like where, where am I just waiting for this to happen, Then I'm going to execute, then I'm going to go out on a limb, then I'm going to take the action. How is that showing up? So, for instance, when I'm fill in the blank X number in sales, when it gets to be air conditioning season, when I hire a good plumbing salesperson, when I get the right service manager, when I fully implement the software, when the kids are in college, whatever it is, right? Those are all aspects of layover mentality. Last and certainly not least, what specific action items can I take right now to create more abundance in my life? There's a myth of sacrifice in leadership, my friends. And as a home service contractor, as a leader in home services, as a professional, you have got to challenge your abundance over your scarcity and grow that abundance and love your past into creating a bigger future. Always make your future bigger than your past. One of the ways we do that is by doing thinking exercises and writing exercises. And that's one of the reasons I created this podcast for you. Four things today. Number one, what are the two things I was taught about money and success? I might still be running a subconscious program that could be holding me back. Number two, what do I really want in my life that I'm minimizing, justifying, making excuses for not doing or having? Number three, where is that layover mentality showing up? What am I waiting for? And lastly, what specific action items can I take right now to facilitate and create more abundance in my life? That's what it's all about, my friends. I want you to rethink your current success strategy. I want you to challenge that scarcity mindset. I want you to embrace abundance and step deeper and further into your greatness.
