65. Dating Business Success - Expect-Plan-Act
15 Nov 2025 · 13 min
Kenny Chapman uses a personal dating story with his partner Christy to draw an extended analogy for business leadership targeted at home service professionals. He presents a simple framework—Expect, Plan, Act—arguing that timing, readiness, and focused attention ("courting energy") determine whether initiatives succeed. The episode stresses aligning expectations, planning thoughtfully, and taking actions that shift culture and attract better team members, concluding with encouragement to create the life and business you want.

Foreign. Welcome back to Leadership in a nutshell for the home service professional just like you, I am your host, Kenny Chapman, and I'm super excited to talk to you. Challenge your mind a little bit today with episode 65 where I've got a question. Dating, business, success. Wait a minute. How about we plan or. Or I should say we expect first, then we plan, and then we act. So I want you to just think about dating and business success. Expecting, planning, and acting. Now, what do I mean by that? This crazy guy with this podcast, getting with us every week, talking, like, now we're talking about dating and business. Hang on. Wait a minute. Here's what I want you to think. See, I'm a student of the subconscious mind. I'm a student of human behavior. I'm a student of why we do things. I'm a student of triggers, and I'm a massive student of beliefs. And so I want you to just kind of think back to a time that you first met somebody, and maybe it's the partner you're with. I won't get into what you've got going on now, so don't even ask me to go there. But here's the thing. I'll just use myself in the lovely Christy as an example for you to model from there. And you think about it in your own life and how this shows up, because there's a business takeaway that I do not want you to miss here. This. We get together to have some fun and we have some laughs, but everything in this podcast is designed to help you, as a home service leader, think differently, act differently, and therefore get different results, Period. That is the only reason whether I love the why. Right? That's my only why for doing this podcast, is to really change your results, change your behavior, increase your emotional regulation. And the way that I want to do that with today's episode is thinking about dating. And so if I think back to when I met the lovely Christy and when I very first asked her out on a date and she said, no, by the way, the first time I asked her out, she said, yeah, no, not going to happen. And I was, like, crushed. And I was like, oh, my gosh. And now I want you to stop right there and think about, have you ever asked your business to do something or ever decided or wanted to do something in the business? And it kind of said, yeah, no, we're not going to do that. Guess what? Sometimes your business is not ready for certain things. Sometimes it's not positioned to be able to make effective use of the tools, the strategies, the resources, the investment that you want to make in it. So when we think about the dating kind of analogy I'm using here today, think about that. So the lovely Christy said, nope, not going to happen, pal. And I'm like, oh, my gosh, why? I'm so crushed. And then she, of course, came quickly back and said, you know, I would love nothing more than to say yes, but I just recently ended a three year relationship and I'm on my own and I'm really discovering who I am as a person and as a strong woman and different things like that. And I just, I'm not in a place for that now. Of course we know that. Just now, here I am like, oh, my gosh, like now I'm even more attracted to this person that wants to know more about herself and wants to get more connected with herself, right? So I'm like, okay, cool, whatever. Now, the first thing is, okay, I want you to think about what I say in sales is no doesn't mean no. It just means, not yet, ladies and gentlemen. And so when she said no, I said, okay. What she means is not yet. Right? But in the reality of the business, the same is true if I ask the business and say, well, wait a minute, you know, do we want to go do this? And of course, I'm speaking hypothetically, but sometimes the business isn't ready and we would have gone nowhere if I would have forced and if I would have called her every day and if I would have kept on, you know, pushing, pushing and went, okay, I respect that. Cool. If your situation ever changes, let me know. And it was about three months later, and three months later I'm doing my own thing, and all of a sudden I get a call from her and she's like, hey, you know, is that cup of coffee still on the table? Was like, well, sure, it's kind of cold now, but yeah, we can go get it. No, just playing. But right, so the fact is, like, she needed to go through some things and be in a different place in order to be effective in the relationship. So fact of the matter is, when you've tried something in the business or maybe you want to do something, maybe the timing isn't right, Right? So, you know, timing is everything they say, whoever they are, right? But the fact of the matter is the wrong thing at the right time is the wrong thing, and the right thing at the wrong time is the wrong thing. Right? So sometimes when we say timing is everything, we think it all lines up, but the right thing at the wrong time does not make sense. And that's true with your business as well. So when you're thinking about your scale and your growth and you know what you want to do with this company, everything's got to be in alignment and you've got to have synergy throughout the organization. So now let's continue with this metaphor. As you think about your business and you think about a dating relationship or something like that. So once I finally got the yes right now I go into think about what happens in my thinking. First of all, I start shifting how I think and where is my focus? I was a quote unquote successful entrepreneur. I had a self managing plumbing, heating, air conditioning business and I played golf about five to six days a week. I was playing golf all the time and I was doing my thing and I was staying out the clubhouse late and all these types of things. All of a sudden the lovely Christy and I go on our first date, we close our favorite Italian restaurant, we go to the monument after that. I can't stop thinking about this person right now. Golf. I don't care if I lose money to my buddies on the golf course, the next day I'm going to stay up thinking about this person and all of my energy, my attention, my focus is on this individual. Think about your business, think about your life, think about your leadership skills, think about your finances. Where is your attention? That's why I'm talking about dating here. Because what. Generally our attention is never heightened more than in the dating situation. That's why when we get into marriage counseling and helping in long term relationships, it's like, do you have date night? Do you have focused time for each other like when we were courting? So there's something about courting energy that is very, very powerful, right? So how are we courting our business? Where I'm thinking about solving challenges, solving solutions, where am I upping my leadership skills so I can connect better with my team, so I can communicate better? It all begins with this shift in how we think. Then from there, see, I've got an expectation, right? I've got an expectation about what Christy and I might do over on the weekend or whatever. And I, I had freedom of schedule at the time. She didn't have freedom of schedule because she had a job that she had certain time and restraints to. And so of course then I sold her on the six month motorhome trip and got her to quit her job. That was a bigger sale than getting her to go for that first cup of coffee or let's be honest, it was a martini. But nonetheless. So at the end of the day, right, it's about how we have expectations. So how is your expectations around your company? Do you expect that it's going to suck? Do you expect that you're not going to attract good team? Do you expect that you're going to be mediocre and run of the mill and status quo? Or do you expect greatness? Do you expect growth? Do you expect attracting incredible team that wants to grow and lives in abundance mindsets and wants to continue to elevate their own game, which automatically elevates the business, which automatically elevates everything that's going on because you're raising your conscious vibration in the world. What do you expect, right, in the dating relationship? Now we're focused on it, now we're thinking about it, right? And then what happens? We start shifting how we act. Now all of a sudden I'm getting the call from my buddies, hey, man, let's play Wednesday afternoon. I need to be done by five, man. What? We always play until seven and then we go have beers at the clubhouse. What do you mean you? Yeah, I kind of have it a little different. I got a date on Wednesday night and then the date on Wednesday night turned into I got another date on Thursday night and the next thing you know, my golf game sucks. But my life is great, right? So let's think about, you know, so what, what? First it's that expectation and then I start planning, like what's going to happen, where we're going to go this weekend or where we're going to go to dinner or where we're going to go hiking or where we're going to go spend some time in the mountains together. Whatever. It was back, that was back when we lived in Colorado, right? And so we have an expectation, then we plan and then we take action. And so when you think about, in this personal relationship, when you enter a dating situation, you start picturing your life more. Maybe you start thinking about what could this be? Like, my gosh, I didn't just find a one, I might have found the one. Now all of a sudden my mind starts going, man, what if we, I don't know, Are we going to start a family together? Are we going to move in together? Are we going to maybe end up getting a home together? What if there's a family situation? Are we going to travel together? What about the business, my friend? Where's your love affair with the company? Where are you dating? Where's that courting energy? If you will to ask your company, hey, what can we do together? What are you envisioning seeing what this could look like? What you could build the team. You know, when I say family, how about your team? Family. Family. The lovely Christy and I don't have children, but we have a ton of really close relationships with our team members, with our clients, with our tribe. What about you and where you're focused on your business? There's this old adage that I've flown in the face of it. I've spoken on, done keynotes against it. Oh, you can't get too close to your team members. They'll judge you. Stop it. That's so too. What did the Black Eyed peas say? That's 2000 late, my friend. That's insane. You got to have close relationships with the people that are close to you. And if you don't have people close to you running your company, then I would encourage you to check yourself and check your relationships. Just my thoughts. I never ask you to adopt my beliefs on this podcast. I ask you to ask yourself about your own beliefs. Because at the end of the day, it's about thinking. And right thinking leads to right action, and right action leads to the right results. And I just want you to embrace that and I want you to think, what are you thinking about? Because if what I'm thinking about, I'm going to take action on. So I used to think about improving my golf game, and I used to think about where I'm going to go to the next golf school and how I'm going to get better. And I did that all in the face of talking smack and having an ego and taking money from my buddies, right? And then all of a sudden, it was the right. That was the right thinking. That's what I wanted. That led to the action. I practiced, I played a lot, and then that led to the results. I got to be a better player. I got to win the game, the money game, whatever that is. I meet the lovely Christie. All of a sudden, my shifting things now, I'm thinking about, well, wait a minute, what does this look like? Maybe this could be a future. We think a lot the same. We have a lot of differences. How do they meld together? Maybe there's synergy here, maybe there's alignment here. Then we start taking action, spending more time together, get to know each other a little more, and ultimately that leads to results. What about your business? What are you thinking about? Are you thinking about less, that, oh, there's not enough skilled talent. There's not Enough calls. There's not enough market share. There's not. Or are you improving your thinking? Who can I become in this role? How can I create the right environment? How can I elevate my culture to attract better team members? How can I have an abundance mind? So I attract people that have abundance mind? What are the actions that I need to take that just by taking action can influence those around me? Those are the things that ultimately get the result. That's what it's all about, my friends. Yes, we're talking about dating. I'm not getting into your personal and intimate relationships, although I do some coaching around that when my clients need it. But here's what I want. I want you to create the life that you want, the life that you desire, the life that you deserve. And I'll remind you today, my friend, it's okay to want what you want because you want it. Now it's time to go create it. I'm Kenny Chapman, you're such humble and honored and grateful host. Humbled to have you with me. Honored to have you with me. Grateful to have you with me.
