The value of your humanity in an automated future | Kevin Roose

In this keynote, journalist Kevin Roose recounts his personal experience of being displaced by an AI news‑writing app and expands the story to show how automation is rapidly encroaching on high‑skill professions such as medicine, law, and software engineering. He argues that the prevailing advice—learn to code, master data science, and chase hard technical skills—is misguided. Instead, he proposes that workers should double down on distinctly human abilities: compassion, storytelling, moral courage, and relationship‑building. Roose illustrates the thesis with three vivid case studies: (1) Russ Garofalo, a former stand‑up comedian who turned tax preparation into an entertaining, human‑focused service; (2) Mitsuru Kawai, a Toyota craftsman who cultivated deep, sensory expertise (monozukuri) that lets him work alongside robots and eventually become Toyota’s first Chief Monozukuri Officer; and (3) Marcus Books, a Black‑owned independent bookstore in Oakland that survived the rise of Amazon by creating a community experience rooted in kindness and cultural relevance. He concludes with a practical call‑to‑action, urging professionals in any field to prioritize human‑centric skills—better bedside manner for doctors, stronger client interaction for lawyers, and deeper user empathy for programmers—as the most reliable way to become “future‑proof” in an increasingly automated world.
