Laurence Edwards of Black Mountain Honey got custom BB Wear gauntlets made to stop bees stinging his wrists. Standard gloves left a gap above the elbow. His bespoke pair has a 10 mm overlap and blue mapper glove attached, and he's had zero stings in several weeks, even in cold, damp weather when bees are aggressive.
Hi, I'm Laurence Edwards from Black Mountain Honey. Welcome to another episode of No Nonsense Beekeeping. Today I'm going to show you a bespoke glove made by BB Wear. So you would have known now, you would have seen this suit is amazing. I don't get any stings through it. I find it really, really comfortable. I find it cool. I find it remarkably good on days like today when it's 15, 16 degrees, it's damp, it's cold, the bees are not happy and they want to sting me. And normally I would take lots of stings on the arms. If I bent over, I might get the occasional sting on the back. Um, I took quite a lot of stings, and this is the reason that I bought this suit. So I've spoken to BB Wear and they've shown me different ways of doing it, and it is a lot better. But what I've got them to make for me, and this is absolutely perfect, is a bespoke BB Wear Ultra Gauntlet glove. Now you might mock me for these, they look like drain cleaners, but I'm going to go out now and say this is the best thing I've bought all year. So these, you can't buy these through BB Wear off the website. This is very much a bespoke piece of kit. So if you've got ideas for bespoke pieces of kit from BB Wear, speak to them. They're really, really happy to kind of work with you. So if you want zips or other little bits added to your suit, or you've got an idea for something like this, Speak to them, and I mean, for a really, really reasonable fee, they will produce anything you want within reason. So all this is, is it's a blue mapper glove connected to an Ultra B gauntlet. Um, and the way these work is you put them on. Now what I was finding with the drawstring as well is it was giving me a bit of irritation over long periods. So what I do now is I don't need to wear the drawstring. So you put the glove on and then you've got a real significant overlap. I mean, it comes up above my elbow, and what that's giving me is supreme protection against stings on the one area where I was taking the stings the most. So like I say, the BB Wear Ultra Suit Really, really good. There's no chance they're getting through that material. But there was still a weak point around my wrists because I was using the wrong gloves. So now I've got these, and as you can see, I've got really, really good protection there now. So like, I'm pretty much kind of 10 millimeters worth of protection around my wrists, but I've also got that air coming through this Ultra Gauntlet material, so it's not kind of making me hot. And I feel a lot more comfortable. So I've had these for a couple of weeks now and I've not taken a single sting. I mean, I started off the year in a normal suit. I was taking probably 100, 150 stings per day. When I moved over to this suit, I mean, not a single sting getting through the suit, but they were still getting through my gauntlet material on my wrists from the gloves that I was wearing. So I wanted to get a better glove to protect against that. And now I think I've found the perfect, perfect solution, you know. Um, really, really strong hard-wearing gloves attached to an ultra-wear BB gauntlet that gives me that kind of crossover protection on my elbow. And then obviously put my hood up and I'm completely protected from all of the stings from the bees. So it doesn't stop me getting stung when I'm doing videos. As you can see, this bee is trying to get me now. Um, it's miserable here today, like it's 14 degrees. That there's a flow on if the weather can get back up, but the bees can't get out because it's just pretty miserable. So yeah, so just wanted to do a video, show you these gloves, let you know, you know what I mean, if you've got these ideas for bespoke pieces of garments or anything like that, speak to BB Wear, you know what I mean, discuss a fee with them for doing it, and they can do pretty much anything within reason.
