Can You Feed Bees Too Much?

In this instructional video Laurence Edwards explains why and how beekeepers can overfeed their colonies during the late season and the negative consequences for winter survival. He describes the common practice of trickle‑feeding when there is no nectar flow, then warns that continuously adding large volumes of syrup (e.g., 12 L at a time) can fill the hive with stores, leaving no space for the queen to lay eggs and severely limiting the production of winter bees. Edwards demonstrates how to assess a colony’s condition by hefting boxes, inspecting each frame, and aiming for a roughly 50 % capped stores / 50 % capped brood balance before winter. He discusses the timing of feeding relative to the ivy nectar flow, noting that bees will continue to forage on ivy regardless of existing stores, so excess syrup can still be wasted. Practical feeder setups are shown, including a 6‑L English feeder wedged into a hive with a straw/hay buffer to prevent drowning, and the importance of limiting feed to a few litres at a time. He walks through a real hive, pointing out frame‑by‑frame store and brood percentages, and concludes with a decision framework: feed just enough to keep colonies alive until the ivy bloom, then stop or give a final small top‑up, avoiding further feeding once the 50/50 balance is achieved. The overall message is to err on the side of caution, monitor weight and space, and recognize that both starvation and overfeeding are detrimental.
