Easy Method To Mark A Queen

Laurence Edwards shows how to mark a queen bee in under 30 seconds without a cage. Pin her down gently, apply oil-based pen ink to the thorax, and you're done. It's faster and less stressful than the traditional caging method.

In this video, I'm going to show you the quickest, easiest method to mark your queens. No nonsense whatsoever. Let's get over to the bees and I'll show you how to mark a queen in less than 30 seconds. Right, I don't have any queens that aren't marked. Massive flaw. So I'm going to go into one of my breeder queens that just got a white spot on her, and I'm just going to put another blue spot on the back just to identify her as a breeder queen, but just to show you how simple this method is. So there's my queen. All I ever do is I let her run around until she's facing the back of me. You might need to prod her a couple of times with your finger. Just make sure she's facing your back. As soon as she's from behind, I squish her down and I put a little spot on her like that. And it's as simple as that. How quick is that? You can see her trying to fly off there. She didn't like that. But that is such a simple, quick, easy method for marking your queen. No cage, doesn't hurt the queen at all. Really quick if you're doing a lot of queens. So hopefully you can see that now. I've got my queen. I've just put a little blue blob on her just so I can see that she's marked blue as well as white. That's my 2-minute method for marking queens without a cage and without picking them up. So there you go, simple as that. No marking cages, no need to pick the queen up, just a real gentle push down like that, pin the queen into position, use an oil-based pen, mark on the thorax, job is done. Want to see my old video where I showed you how to do that? It took 15 minutes. I'm trying to condense those videos down just a little bit now, but if you want to see the long version with a cage, check out this video here.
