How To Make A Hive Stand

A builder shows how to make a compact fold-in stand for two beehives using 4x2 timber, bolts from B&Q, and basic tools. The stand collapses flat for storage in a garage or car. Legs are 400 mm and 600 mm, with bolt holes 140 mm from each edge.

I'm just going to do you a little video on how to make a stand for 2 hives. You can make it 3 or 4 depending on the length, and these are the things you'll need. I won't list everything, you can see on the table what we've got and what I'm using. Slug pellets, that will come a little bit more evident later on. The bolts are a pack from B&Q, they're only a couple of pounds. And then you need 2 lengths, 3 meters long, of 4x2, about £7.50 a length, so £15 there. And that's just a little bit of 3x1. You just need a piece 1100 long, and I'll show you what we do. As you can see, I've wrote the sizes on there so you can see. There are 2 pieces at 400, there are 2 pieces 600, there are another 2 pieces at 600. They make up your 4 legs. From here down, both these pieces are for the tops. From each edge in, I measured 140. That's going to be the holes for the bolts, and 350, that's where the Bars will go across. Same from this side, 140 in holes for the bolts, 350s will be the bars. So what I'll do now is I'll drill these four holes, and I'm going to pilot two in each one of those for the cross members, and then I'll come back. Right, now I'll make the cross rails. This will stand up. This one. Just a bit. This one means you can stack it down there. Now it's all finished. The best thing about this is these legs fold in to the centre, so it makes it nice and slim and easy to stack. So it takes up very little room in your garage or in your car. When you want it again, lift up the legs, lift up the legs, and there you go.
