A beekeeper repurposes a 25 mm Kingspan insulation board as an insulated crown board. He seals the rough edges with aluminium foil tape and drills a 2-inch central hole for winter feeding or fondant delivery, creating a clean insulated surface under the hive roof.

This is extra firm or Kingspan, and normally when you cut it you get a really rough sawn edge that I'll show you in a minute. You can get sometimes out of skips, and if you get little pieces like this, this is what I'm wanting to show you. An aluminium tape you can get from plumbers merchants, just a tin foil tape, it's really sticky. So what I do is I take my board like this, 25mm, there's a crown board measuring 460 by 460, and simply drill A 2-inch hole in the center, but you see the mess it makes. And I pop this piece out, and then with the tin foil tape, I pop the center out, and I've gone all the way around the edge to clean up that edge, same as I've gone all the way around this edge to clean up this edge, and all the way around the center. That means in winter you can use it blanked off, or you can take it out and feed fondant straight over the top, or you can put your feeder straight on the top, and you have the perfect insulated board to sit under your roof.
