Laurence Edwards shows a single open brood cell with a larva being tended by worker bees. He keeps the frame because it's the only open cell, making it easy to work with and a sign of a healthy hive.

So here's my open cell. I can see the larvae in it. It's quite hard to zoom, um, but notice the bees and the way that they're tending to that cell. You can just see one pop their head in there, just checking that it's all right. The bees are really intent on making sure that cell's protected, and they want to nourish it and feed it. That's the cell that you're looking for. That is a perfect cell. And there's no other cells on that frame as well, so it's even better because it means I don't have to start brushing bees off to kill the other cells. That's the cell that I'm going to keep, so I'm going to put that frame off to one side now.
