Laurence Edwards checks nuc colonies after removing Apivar strips. At 11-12°C, bees are still foraging on ivy and frames show four to five of brood. He estimates 80-90% of the nucs look strong enough to survive winter.

Just taking the Apivar strips out of the nucs. Looks so healthy. It's about 11 or 12 degrees here today. They're still getting out, they're still going out for a feed on the ivy. Really nice and strong. Not cracked any frames or anything, but you know what I mean. You can look from this colony here, they're in a really, really nice state going into winter. If I had to guess, this would be kind of over like 4 or 5 frames of brood, but yeah, it's a complete guess. They could be broodless. God knows what's going on in those frames at the moment, but when they're as heavy as they are here and when you crack them open and there's that many bees, chances are they're going to get through the winter really, really nicely. They're not all like this, but I'd say 80-90% of them are looking really, really good for winter.
