What Is The Best Disposable Beekeeping Glove?

Laurence Edwards tests ten disposable glove types from Medi-In to find the best for beekeeping. He evaluates thickness, cuff length, fit, and color, noting that dark gloves provoke bees and baggy cuffs let them inside. The extra-thick high-risk latex glove wins for its stretch, texture, and cuff design.

Not all disposable gloves are made equal. Medi-In sent me 10 sample gloves to have a little bit of a play with. I'm going to go through all of the samples and tell you which one is my favorite. I'm not paid for this review, they don't get to see it before it's posted, it's all my own thoughts, and I'm going to give you my best recommendation for the gloves from Medi-In that are disposable in nature. Right, we'll start from the top. First one I've got is an extra thick Vitriol. So I like these ones in terms of the material thickness, nice and thick. What I really don't like though— 2 things I don't like about it. One is you've got this baggy cuff. Really not a fan of baggy cuffs. Also don't like the fact that they're not a long-cuffed variant. I've been through so many different versions of disposable gloves like these. For me, they have to be long-cuffed, but even more important than that, they have to be tight-cuffed as well. Hate it when they go baggy like that, because if you wear it, they get up inside it, they sting you on the wrists. It's a nightmare. So these first ones, extra thick. I like the material. You can really feel that they're nice. They're probably going to last a good few inspections. Don't think they're going to tear as easy as the thinner ones, but not a fan of that cuff. Right, next ones I've got latex thick high-risk powder-free, extra large size these ones are. And already looking at these, I really like the look of these. These are very similar to the gloves that I use at the moment, and just putting them on, I really like these. I love the feel of them. They're very, very good fit. Really nice long cuff. Excellent fit on the hand. Not so keen on the color. I think you can probably get a better color than that because the dark color is not good for the bees. Not sure if you can see that, but there's kind of like some micro texture on the edge of those as well. Really good for picking things up. I know you're going to get muck and propolis on that anyway. Really nice texture. Very, very tight. Nice. Oh, come on! It's bloody half eight in the evening. That was not necessary. Right, got stung in the finger there. Went for my head, got me a bit in the finger. Half eight—that is just not acceptable. I really like these though. Nice big long cuff all the way down there. Nice tight cuff. They are a very, very good fit for me as well. And as I've said, Medien—they're not giving me any money for these reviews. They're not going to see the review before it goes out. There's some gloves in there that I'm absolutely going to slate, and these are the first time that I've seen these gloves, so I've not kind of pre-prepared anything. But I have to say, I really like that one as a glove. So they've given me some pricing on some of these as well. It's a little bit confusing, but for £72.50 you get 10 boxes of 50 pieces, so you get 500 gloves, 250 pairs I assume that is, for £72.50. Probably not that bad for quite a hard-wearing glove like that. Maybe the disposable ones are a little bit cheaper. Right, next up we've got some more Nitriles, extra thick, powder-free this time around. I'm going to pick out the blue ones because black is not for beekeeping, really not very good. The bees do not like dark colors and they just attack you quite badly. Right, and I've just realized they put on the label there that the blue is a medium, so there is no way my hand is getting in that. I'll take a look at the black one and I will review it for the black, but I wouldn't buy it in a black. So there we go, black gloves, exactly the same problem. Cuff's too short and it's a little bit baggy as well. Bees are going to get up there. These ones aren't for me. Now seriously, orange gloves? Who in their right mind will wear orange gloves for beekeeping? These ones though are extra thick. I'm struggling to get the laughter out there. Extra thick T-grip nitrile powder-free gloves. And again, okay, they're pretty dashing, aren't they? Orange gloves. Griff's setting all the trends, isn't he? Um, but these ones here, quite thick. I like the thickness. I don't know if you can see that. You get a rib texture on them as well. But come on, they got this baggy cuff. I just can't be dealing with a baggy cuff. Means that you got to wear gauntlets with it. Bees will get up inside it. Baggy cuffs, short cuffs, definitely not for me. Right now we're talking extra thick extended. This is what I'm talking about. Let's get inside and see what these ones are like. So they do these in blue. They do them in black as well. But the sample they sent me, the extra large, is in black. And I have to say, I quite like these ones. You've not got like a perfectly tight wrist on them, little bit baggy, but they're long enough in order for them to be okay. And once you've got like a bee suit on underneath that, that will keep it tight as well. Nice thick material, quite like these ones. I know they're disposable gloves, there's not a huge amount you can say about them, but they fit, they've got a nice texture, they're thick, they've got the decent size, nice lengthy cuff, and the cuff has got a good amount of give in it as well. So as good as you can get, really. Right, next ones, we've got some latex powder-free gloves for anybody who particularly likes latex. And they do feel quite nice, the latex ones. So they're definitely thinner, and I quite like that in a glove. Although they're probably going to tear a little bit easier, it means you get really good control, really able to feel what's going on. The cuffs on these as well, they're not long cuffs, but they're a little bit longer, a little bit more stretch in the latex. I know some people get allergic to latex, um, but I quite like those gloves even though they're not a long cuff variant. If you could get a latex kind of extra thick with a long cuff and not a baggy cuff, I think that's where I'd be going. Quite like those ones though. And then final ones, I've got vinyl blue powder-free. Let's try these ones on. So I hate these ones, absolutely hate them. The reason I don't like them is it's just got a really weird feel to them like that, but also it's that baggy cuff again. Really not a fan of that baggy cuff. Like, if you can see inside, that is just asking for bees to kind of get up there. Not a fan of those at all. So there is only one winner here for me. It's this extra thick high-risk latex glove. Really like that. Very, very similar to the gloves that I use from another company, but I think these are a little bit nicer. You know, they've not got like a flock lining to them, so I don't think they've got a flock lining to them, and the flock lining from the other gloves can get a little bit annoying after a while. Get like all bits on your hand. These ones here got a really good amount of stretch to them, nice texture, really nice and thick. Hopefully they do these in some better colors. Definitely not going to be doing it in blue, but that is my pick of the bunch for this video— the extra thick high-risk latex glove. I've spoken way too long about gloves, so I'll let you go off now and do something else.
