"New Option Generator" Paraliminal, Session A, with Dr. Paul Scheele

Dr. Paul Scheele teaches a paraliminal technique to break through feeling stuck by mapping conflicts on a timeline and grid, then physically anchoring opposing states to negotiate a new way forward.

Welcome here. The new option generator has a wonderful history and I would love to give you a couple of key components for the session. A of new Option generator. Throughout my life as a personal development coach and consultant, I've recognized that people enter stuck states where a part of them wants to move forward and a part of them doesn't. You'll actually hear them say that and mark it out with their respective hands. So say things like, well, part of me would really like to do this, but another part of me would really rather not. And when they do that, marking it out, you'll actually see a split in their nonverbal behavior. As if there are two people living inside of the skin of that one body. Well, it's actually the case. Think about your life as if it were a timeline. From the very beginning of your life till now and then extending on out into the future. In terms of your physical body, you could think about your past being behind you and to your left and your future being in front of you and out to the right. Now, throughout your life, you've experienced many points in space and time. And when you were younger, you may have had a very difficult situation, problem that arose that created a fear within you that said, don't ever do that again.
For example, you may have been humiliated publicly because of some behavior you engaged in. Could have been when you were 3, 4 or 5 years old, doesn't really matter. But at that point there became, on your timeline, this fixed view of the world. It became a way in which you looked at the world and as a protection mechanism to you, you developed this commitment to never doing that again. Well, fast forward years later. Now the context of your life is much bigger. You need to be able to move forward on this important goal. It's something that you really desire.
Part of you really wants to do this, but a part of you is holding you back. This is what we would call a stuck state. Now, if I were to just interview people, all of you that are here, if I were to say, do you feel stuck? Most people would say, well, no, not really. Well, are there any areas of your life where you can do something, you want to do something, but you're not doing it? Oh yeah, there are plenty of those. Well, that's what I would call a stuck state, where you want to do it, but for whatever reason, you're not doing it.
So imagine a bit of a grid, a four quadrant grid, where you could think about the positive future that you would like to engage in. You want to be a writer, you want to get a new job, you want to enter a new career, whatever it may be, you want to exercise more or lose weight or get into a new relationship. This is your ideal future. That's.
In this quadrant and in the lower left quadrant. You've got this situation where you have things going on that you want or that you have and that you don't want. You have things that you want and don't have and things that you have and you don't want. When we think about personal development, we're always looking at that movement where we are now in the situation, negative situation that we don't want to a future situation that we really desire. That's goal setting, that's personal growth. Makes a lot of sense. So why don't we just visualize it and make it happen?
Well, because associated with the negatives of the present situation, there's some secondary gain.
For example, in the early part of my career, I really desired to be an international speaker. Made a lot of sense, would help my career, would move my work forward. Terrific.
So why am I not doing well? I have kids at home. I don't want to be on the road all the time. Well, what if I get in front of a group and they don't really like what it is I have to present?
You know, it's, I'm safer here. I'll let other people do the traveling and the public speaking. Things are going to things. There are some present positives, some benefits to the negative situation that I'm in presently. Do you get that?
Similarly, oh, this looks so great. I really want to accomplish it. And with all of those benefits of the future situation, there's probably also a few negatives.
Well, what happens if I go to another country, somebody is promoting me and I do all this work and they don't pay me. It happened.
Yes. So, you know, that's, that's a negative to the future.
So with the benefits of one side, there's also some detriments. And with the detriments of one side, there's also some benefits. Do you see? So it's an issue of the benefits and the detriments wrestling it out with each other and, and this push and pull, this oscillation in my neurophysiology, my brain, my mind, I want it, I don't want, I want it, I don't want it. This oscillation creates what's called a stuck state.
So the metaphor of this paralympical is Geneva, Switzerland, where warring countries come together and lay down their weapons of mass distraction. And actually meet to discuss what are the possibilities here. Let's hear each side. Now, physiologically, what we're doing is we're anchoring.
The detriments of the present situation and the benefits of the future situation in the respective hands on your physical body.
And we're also saying, and what are the benefits of the current situation and the detriments of the future situation? So we're getting them that split very well mapped out physically in your hands. You actually sit with your hands facing up, palms up, and you're stacking all of those resource anchors, all of those states in your respective hands. Now, what we're going to then do is allow those two hands, those two states of being, being those two points in space and time, those two aspects of your life, to learn from each other, to negotiate, to dialogue and see. You know, accomplishing that goal really is something that I'm committed to. And I've got to work out what are the problems and the fears associated with that and is it okay for me to proceed. So instead of just being stuck all the time, there's a real interior communication that's occurring that brings these two sides together and.
Creates a new resource state. Think about it this way. Have you ever heard of the idea of a comfort zone?
So what's a comfort zone? A comfort zone is a continuum of possible actions that you could engage in, and they are bounded. That comfort zone is bounded by stop signs. Stop sign says, don't go beyond this point, because if you do, remember there are bad things that could happen. And on the other end of our comfort zone, there's a stop sign that says, now don't go on the other side of that stop sign, because if you do, bad things could happen. Well, we're living our lives between these two endpoints. What this does when we bring these two hands together is it goes, E, E, E, E.
And it pops out those stop signs so that you can explore possibilities that have been walled off to you up until now. So, for example.
When you're a little boy or a little girl, somebody said to you, why are you so happy? You just sit down and be quiet. Oh, well, it's not okay to be joyful. It's not okay to be enthusiastic. It's not okay for me to be the way I am. Just behave well. Just be yourself. Well.
Do you get that this is a double bind? If somebody says to you.
Be spontaneous.
What are you supposed to do with that? The moment that they give you that command, it's impossible to fulfill it because now you're thinking about it. How can you possibly be spontaneous? It's called the be spontaneous paradox. Well, there's a lot of those paradoxical situations where you run into the end point of that comfort zone and bump and oscillate and stay stuck. Well, when you pop those off and your mind can explore things that were there when you were younger that got walled off for you, and you can look into the future and imagine possibilities that people said you could never accomplish, and you can live in those. Now you've got all of these possibilities. There's no more rock and hard place. The dilemma, the double bind, has been removed so that at least your consciousness, your mind, your body can explore possibilities that have been.
Walled off to you up until now. That side a the session A of this paraliminal. Now, what are you going to do with that? That session being? We'll talk about that in our next program. But hopefully you get the idea. This is such an important concept for breakthrough in your life. This is. It's a unique class of problems that we face. They're called paradoxical problems. They exist.
As the unintended consequence of the way we're going about trying to accomplish what we want. The very act of attempting to accomplish what we want produces the problem. So the new option generator. Anytime you want to do something you haven't been able to do up until now, this is the one. This is the one that really creates breakthrough. Now, I designed an entire course around this. It's called the Natural Brilliance program. And in it, each element of this are four parallel that go into it. Now, the new option generator is as if you're taking the entire program. New option generator and doing it in one parallel. So if you want to explore it, if you want to expand it, you want to really get cognitively what all this is about. There's a great course of study or read the book Natural Brilliance, which was my second. But.
And as you approach anything that you're really ready to break through on that you haven't been able to get to up until now. Yes, New option generator. So do enjoy it. I hope you have it in your library. Have a spectacular day today and I'll see you in our next session. Thanks so much.
