"Self-Esteem Supercharger" Paraliminal with Dr. Paul Scheele

Dr. Paul Scheele explains how self-esteem differs from self-image and why family, culture, and education shape it. He reframes failures as learning experiences and references Eckhart Tolle's work on separating identity from ego, offering tools to build unconditional positive regard.

Welcome to this beautiful day. Today we're playing with the Self Esteem Supercharger. And when I first developed this program, I actually was going to create the Self Image supercharger. And I didn't know at the time, but discovered shortly thereafter that self image is very different than self esteem. Self imaging is a process of comparing ourselves to others. Self esteem is an unconditional positive self regard. Now, as I explored this through the years, one of the important distinctions I discovered is for me personally, I had a tendency to look at my life in terms of the things, things I didn't do very well. Like I blew it here and I really made a mistake there. And, you know, if only I had done that differently, it would have been much better. And so on and so on. Not a whole lot of positive self regard. And when I discovered that self esteem is actually something that can be fostered by the culture that raises us, by our educational institutions, our religious institutions, our family system, then we realize that it requires a positive regard of another individual for them as infants and little children to have a positive regard for themselves.
There is a book by Jean Isley Clark called Self Esteem A Family Affair. And what she points out is that there are different stages in life. And when we have a significant disconnect from our positive self regard, then what happens is we get stunted in our self esteem. We stop developing at a certain level of our own emotional intelligence. When I contacted a man named Bill McGrane who had the McGrain Institute of Self Esteem, he said something quite profound. He said, actually, what we have to do is eliminate our self image altogether.
Stop in that, stop in that process of self imaging.
Everything that we do, we do the very best that our current awareness permits. And so what we need to recognize is that we're always growing in our awareness as a result of that growing in that positive and unconditional recognition of the magnificence that resides within us now, when we can start at that place of, yes, my mind can do this, yes, I can learn and grow. Yes, no matter what I do, whether it succeeds or fails, I believe in myself, in my capacity to get better and better each day. When we're in that mode, anything is possible. You become unstoppable. And so the Self Esteem Supercharger is one of the really key para liminals in the entire library. And it really works at the level of our own heart. I remember when I was doing some work on myself, when I shifted the way I viewed myself as an infant growing up, it was as if all of a sudden, in my interior world just trans. Transformed significantly is that all these situations and circumstances in which I saw failure and not good enough, and if only I had and so on, all of a sudden those were perfect learning experiences. Well, of course I had to go through that. Of course I needed to have that failure. Otherwise I wouldn't have moved in the direction that I did. And so on and so on and so on. Now I know people who were hated by their mothers while they were in the womb.
Could that have an effect on us before we're even born, before we even develop cognition? Actually, absolutely it can. And the birth experience can be very traumatic. And all kinds of traumas during our lives can separate us from understanding the magnificence of who we are. At some point, we can reclaim that relationship to who we truly are.
Absolutely magnificent beyond all measure. You have capabilities, potentials that are beyond your wildest imagination. And the only way you would ever discover them or recognize them or operate from that magnificence and is to have this unconditional positive regard of who you are. Now, I think it's very interesting. Recently the paralyminals were translated into the German language, High German. And the very first paralyminal that was selected was this one, Self Esteem Supercharger. And I can understand why, because it really is the foundation for all the rest of our personal growth and development.
One of the things that a colleague of mine did is to help teach self esteem to children in classrooms is she built little dolls of feelings. So there's one for anger and fear and jealousy and rage, and there's one for peace and joy and happiness. And she also has one. For she calls it the Golden Shadow. It's the true beauty that's within us, which is our natural state. And what happens if you're magnificent and you have all kinds of potential and something happens and you're taken out by it and your mood shifts and you become angry and jealous and fearful. Is that okay? Of course. Because who you are is not your emotions. Who you are is not your thoughts. Who you are is not your mind. Who you are has a mind, has thoughts, has feelings, has emotions. You have a physical body. You're not your physical body. So who you are transcends all of that. I don't know if you are familiar with.
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, but one of the things that happened for him is that he.
Was very depressed and he really couldn't stand himself. And one day as he was walking, he heard this Voice says, I can't live with myself any longer, contemplating suicide. And he suddenly paused and said, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. I can't live with myself. So the I and myself are actually two separate things. Who said that? Who is the I and who is the myself? Right. If you think about those three parts, Me, myself and I. There's me. That is this recognition of who you are as a person. There's myself, which is this description of your personality. And then there's this I, this true consciousness, this pure consciousness, this awareness that has all of this, this human experience that you're going through. And at one point, he sat down. Eckhart Tolle sat down, said, I'm not moving from this bench till I have this figured out. And I've also noticed that with people who have contemplated suicide in their lives, you know, there's a million choices that we could make at every moment in time, any moment in time, millions of choices. But what happens for them is that the choices or comfort zone keeps coming in and in and in to the point where they have two choices. One is that they live with this pain for all the rest of their lives, or the other is that they kill themselves and end it in a blinding flash.
Well, hold on a moment. How did their life get to the point where they only saw those two choices? As Eckhart Tolle did he recognize, wait a minute. I have all kinds of choices, and all those choices are exercised in this now moment. This feeling is my choice. This thought is my choice. And while I've developed habits of feeling this way, and while I've developed habits of thinking and habits of expectation that don't serve me, I have the power to change that right here and right now. So the Self Esteem supercharger guides you through a process where you look at your reflection in a mirror and one of the mirrors that's there in front of you is very distorted. This is the distorted thinking and feeling that we were in when significant and traumatic events occurred. It's where we made mistaken judgments, where we have made faulty conclusions, where we live with mythical fears about our inability, our insufficiency. And then there's a mirror that reflects the true power and potential that you are. And as we live into that greater power, as we feel the expansion of possibility within us, we realize anything is truly possible. Now, at the end of the recording, it invites you to consider. As you go to sleep tonight, do a brief mental review of your day and see what went well. See what went well, what worked. That you would like to do more of in the future and also look forward to the positive results of the coming day. The most important relationship you have is your relationship with yourself. See the magnificence within you today and have an absolutely spectacular day and we'll see you again for the next session. Peace and blessings.
