Hello, good to be with you again. I'm Paul Shealy and today we're going to be talking about Smoke Free, the paralympical that helps anyone be able to quit smoking. Now, if you're a smoker, you know that no one can make you stop smoking. I remember when I first studied hypnosis and was helping people quit. People would call me up and they'd say, can you make me stop smoking? The first thing I'd say is, no, I can't. But when you're ready to, I can help. You know, Sam Clemens or Mark Twain said quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world to do. He should know he did it thousands of times. The idea is that there is a positive intention that always is behind the beginning of a smoking habit. A positive intention, meaning you did it for a reason and it provides something to you. For some, it's the only time during the break, during their day where they take a break, they get away from other people, they hold that burning ember and they say, leave me alone, I'm going to take a break. The other thing is that it may be for some the only time during the day that they really take deep breaths that they consciously attend to.
The idea of being breathing like this is very relaxing. And while nicotine is a chemical that is designed to kind of numb the physical body, it's also an irritant and it's also an upper so that once the relaxation effects wear off, there's more irritation and there's more anxiety with a need to get back to smoking. The other thing that is important to understand about cigarettes is that the development of the habit wasn't instantaneous. You had to work at it to actually create the habit. And I say you can never break a habit, you can only start a new one. So the question becomes, what is the new habit that you would like to be able to relax, to be able to take a break, to be able to chill out and not have the world around you bother you anymore. What would those habits look like? What is it that you're truly desiring to do? And I worked with thousands of people to break old habits that no longer serve them. And hundreds and hundreds of people that I've worked with to quit smoking. I was even certified as a trainer for the American Lung Associations Quit Smoking program.
And one of the things that I discovered after years of working with clients is that there's an ideal protocol to help people. And so the smoke free paralliminal is designed in two parts. The first part is Getting you ready to choose to quit isn't that interesting. You know, when my wife and I don't want to do something, we say, oh, you know, I really wish I wanted to do that. And perhaps that's your situation where you wish you wanted to quit smoking, but you don't really want to quit smoking. So you have to decide at what time you're going to choose to do that, because there will be a day where you just aren't going to smoke anymore. There was there. There is an idea that.
If you notice your hit, your cigarette smoking behaviors, you may find from time to time that you'll have a couple of cigarettes going in a couple of different places, you'll come into room, you'll see a cigarette lit and you go, where'd that come from? It's so unconscious, you didn't even know that you lit it. So the idea is to start becoming exquisitely aware of your smoking so that you realize there are a lot of cigarettes during the day you don't really want and you don't really need. It's just a habit that, that you're propelled to do from your physiology. One of the things that was studied about cigarette smoking is that it tends to reduce the acid content in the body. So when a person's stressed and there's a lot of acid buildup, smoking actually helps to reduce it as. And that's been calculated by urine samples to determine the acidity. So there is there again, I want to get at this idea. There are a lot of physiological reasons why the habit may continue, but there is, there's a lot of ways of leveraging that to help you become a non smoker. So the first thing, session eight is about becoming exquisitely aware. So that when you take a cigarette, you notice what you do, how you hold it, what you do, how you light it, the techniques used to get the cigarette out of the pack, everything associated with it. And when you do take a puff of a cigarette, notice all of the physiological responses that you have to it. And if you would do that, you're going to be able to recognize that at some points.
You'Re going to say, I don't really need to have this cigarette. Or you may take one or two puffs and then put the cigarette out because you don't need the rest of it. You know, the first few puffs on a cigarette aren't too bad, but the last few, especially if you're burning it down close to the filter, those get pretty nasty. So if you can extinguish the cigarette early and realize that I was fine with that. You're going to discover how much agency or choice you actually have in choosing to not smoke and recognize h, I actually smoked 10 less cigarettes today, and I feel a lot better. Another day might go by and you say, wow, I only had five cigarettes. I'm used to smoking 20 or more. And what will happen is, as the days go by, you're going to be able to choose more and more often to not have to have a cigarette. Or you might go out with friends. Nobody else is smoking. You gotta leave. You gotta ask yourself, do I really need to go take this cigarette? As long as you're out there and you're having it.
How much of it do you need to smoke? Why are you really smoking? Do you want to get away from your friends or you want to be with your friends? So you recognize more and more often the choicefulness. You have to choose not to have a cigarette now. At some point you're going to be able to say, you know what? I'm done with this. I would rather be able to walk up a flight of stairs and not be winded. I'd rather have my clothes and my breath and my face smell good. I like to get into my car and not have that grimy film on the window. I'd like to get rid of the stains on my fingers and my teeth. I'd rather get rid of this nasty cough that I had. My sister had a cough, and she smoked from the time she was a teenager. She smoked for years and years and years.
All day long, all night long, you know what I mean? Into the evening. And finally her doctor said, you know, this cough of yours, it's not going to go away as long as you're smoking.
She quit at that moment. And I called her up and I asked her, how did you do that? She had no withdrawal symptoms. And after that tremendous history of smoking, it just was gone. One day she was a smoker, one day she wasn't. I said, how did you do that? She said, well, you have to understand she was a student of the science of mind and a teacher of science of mine. She said, well, I always knew it was in my mind, so I changed my mind. I thought that was pretty cool. Pretty easy, too. So you're getting to that point where you're ready to change your mind. And on that day, you begin listening to session B. You don't listen to session B before then. You decide the day that you're going to choose to develop new habits of being A non smoker, breathing, relaxing, feeling good, going for walks, increasing your health and wellness, on and on and on. Right? That day, you listen to session B. The protocol that I take you through is one that duplicates what you would do when you were smoking and allow your body to take those breaths, relax. And notice that not only can you relax, but you also don't have the negative after effects of being more irritated afterwards and still take those breaks. You still give yourself space, still allow yourself to breathe. But now all of the benefits start to kick in. Your body is immediately starting to heal itself. After working with hundreds of smoking clients, one of the things I started noticing over and over again is people were very afraid to quit smoking because they were concerned that they're going to put on weight. Now, I want you to understand something about that because the smoke free Paralympical helps overcome that issue.
Because nicotine is a stimulant. What it does is it ramps up your metabolic systems. So if all you did was continue to eat the same way you always ate.
After you quit smoking, you would have a tendency to put on a few pounds, somewhere between five and eight pounds. And what happens for most people is they step on the scale, they see those three pounds come on, or those five pounds come on. I knew it was going to happen. I'm going to put on all kinds of weight. And of course now that's programming the mind to keep that up. And so what they do is they continue to eat more and more in alignment with the idea. I'm going to put on £20.
Instead. What happens is you see those few pounds go on, continue to relax, continue to eat the same, or cut back a little bit. And what you notice is the weight starts to drop shortly after that. Because with the positive mindset now, your body is reestablishing a more normal metabolic function and the weight starts to burn off. And many clients that I've worked with have lost 10 to 20 pounds as a result of quitting smoking. Not gain them, but actually lose them. So if you don't want to lose any weight, then you don't have to. But the idea is you don't have to gain weight. And that's a real beautiful thing about communicating with the body in this new way. So the Session B protocol, I'm not going to get into it right now, but essentially what you're doing is you're focusing on living each day with a set of new habits. Remember, you can't break an old habit, you can only establish a new one. So you become very clear about what are the habits of this new lifestyle of being a true non smoker. So enjoy this paralimal. It's worked for people all over the world. I know that you're going to have the result that you choose to create in your life. This is Paul Shealy. All the best. That's all for now.
