Bentley's 3 Tenets To Pass Pro.mp4

Former NFL lineman LeCharles Bentley teaches offensive linemen three pass protection principles: explode out of your stance when the ball snaps, control space by playing inside-out, and use aggressive hands and knees to shut down defenders. He drills the techniques at full speed with focus on instinctive reactions under pressure.

Get out of your stance. I'm gonna repeat this. Most important, you walk up, you don't know the offense. You ain't gonna know it, trust me. You don't know the offense. You don't know what the hell is going on. You're not really comfortable with the cadence. Only thing you're gonna be thinking is this, guys: get your ass out the stance. Ball is snapped. You're up. You're ready to roll. Number 2: Create space. Correct? Why? I'm gonna keep repeating this stuff so you guys understand. This stuff is gonna be like, uh, how can I put it? If I ask you your name, what is your name? Tad what? What's your name? You see how easy that was? How old are you? How old are you? When's your birthday? When's your birthday? What's the most important part of fast, bro? What's the second most important part of fast, bro? See what I'm saying? I want it to be like that. So when you get up there, the game is going to be fast, but you're going to be able to adapt to the game that much faster because you know what you're trying to do. Now, once you've created that space, where do you want to put that space? Where should that space be? Why? Uh, create more time for you to adjust. No. Why? Why do you want to play inside out of the defender? So you can see what he's doing. No. Far away from the quarterback. No. I want to play inside out because, as I said, offensive line is a dictatorship. Too many of us play as Democrats. Get out here and let's see. I'll give you a vote. I'll give you a vote what you're going to do to me. No. This is a dictatorship. I will tell you what you can or can't do to me. And then after I allow you to figure out what you want to try to accomplish, I will pummel you. But I'm not going to put myself in a position where you can pick and choose if I'm going to make you my girlfriend or not. You see what I'm saying? Now, knee to crotch. Outside knee cuts defender in half. Why? As I just said, this is dictatorship. You play foot to foot with defenders, you give them options. Inside, outside, through you. I don't want to give you those options. I want to put myself in a position where I limit your options. I make you have to think about what you're going to do. Defenders do not like to think. That's why they play defense. They're better athletes, that's why they play defense. But we are thinkers. Not great athletes, some of us are good, not great, but we're thinkers. I'm gonna make you think about what you wanna do. I create my space, boom, I'm on my stance, here we go, knee to crotch. Play outside. Fine, I'll keep creating more space, keep playing, keep playing, keep playing, keep play— next thing you know, ball's gone. You decide, boom boom boom boom, I'm coming inside, that's fine, torque my elbows, sit on the bulrush. I sit here, boom, you go inside, oh my God. You go inside here, oh, have you seen my left hand? The pimp hand? That pimp hand is strong. You go inside, it's highlight time because now I threw it to the wrong one. That make sense to you? Okay. Kyle, let me see you— no, T, T, you start first. You start first. You start first. Let me see you get out of your stance. Out of your stance. 3-point? 3-point. 3-point. 3-point. Very good. Now, take a set. Full set. Very nice. Again. Nice. Again. I'm the defender. I'm the defender. What's the first thing you— Kyle, what is he doing wrong? Get out, go ahead. Nah, he fixed it. First thing is this. Look at defenders. I don't— a lot of guys, they play like this. What the hell you looking at down there? The guy you're trying to block is over here. So number one, you walk up. Go over there. Go over there, face that way. Face that way. You gettin' the play from the quarterback. Come on out the huddle. I'm the defender. I'm lined up right here. What's your thought process? Go through it. Give it to me. Uh, get out my stance. Huh? Uh, make sure I get my knee to your crotch and create space while I'm doin' it. Mm-hmm. Where am I at? Where am I at? Where am I at? Can you do what— do you have what you want right now? No. No, I gotta get myself there. Yeah. Right? What's the best path for you to take to get there? Uh, vertical. Vertical. Hold on, hold on. But if you get vertical, don't you close the pocket? No. Why? You sure about that? That's what I heard. I heard if you guys get straight back that you close the pocket. And you know, as a guard, if you create space, you close the pocket down. Is this true? Tell me, is this true? Huh? Interiorly That's the depth of the pocket. Tackles, the width of the pocket. But if you're here and you're getting here vertical, aren't you limiting the width of it? No, you're not. No. That's what I'm thinking about, like, I'm trying to find my eyes. No, you're not. And then Kyle, seriously, as a guard, if you create space between you and the defender out the gate, Some people may say, well, you're going to be in the quarterback's lap. I didn't ask you to do this. I didn't ask you to do that. I just said get out your stance, boom, create that space, get inside out, now you can play ball. Here's the problem, as you just said. When you're here as a defender— I'm here as a defender, sorry— and the natural inclination is for you to think that you have to get out here to me. Correct? Hypothetically, Kyle's your guard. He's sliding. Matter of fact, let's give a visual. Kyle, step in here for me. Slide over a little bit. You are the right guard, and we have a slide protection going to the left. So you are going to be Gilligan. You are an island by yourself. So on the snap, I want you to slide that way, and I want you to come out to me as a defender. Here we go. Set, go. Don't move! Don't move. Let's do this one more time. One more time. Kat, just take two steps. Two steps. I don't want to think any— I don't want to think— I don't know where you going. Just take two. Sir Clark, here you go. Here you go. Here you go. I'm the center. Boom. Here's the one technique right here. All you're trying to do, all you're trying to do is overtake this one. Here we go, here we go, here we go. And I'm the defender. I'm here. Set, go. Don't move. Now, now, cut. Don't move. Stand up, stand up, stand up, Frank. Look at this. Y'all see this? You see this, right? I run a 4.5. I'm 6'6". Arms this long. Waste this short, legs a mile long. You're a good athlete and all, don't take this personal, but that right there is a sack. I got a 2-year-old that can run through that. All I'm gonna do, take one step and make you move your feet. And this is a lot of ground. But anybody, I don't care if you are Anthony Munoz, I don't care if you are Walter Jones, I don't care if you are Orlando Pace, I don't care if you are Jake Long, Joe Thomas, This is a lot of space for anybody to cover. I don't care if you're a running back with great feet, you cannot cover this much space. And if you can do it, you can do it for one play, right? Hell, you're lucky. Matter of fact, you are good. You are a 5-star recruit. You like that one? You are a 5-star recruit. A guy like you, man, oof. You just, uh, you're just a guy, man. You can't cover that. You can't even play dead. That's what Scout said. So a couple of them like me, man. All right, all right. No, look, seriously, guys, maybe you can do it for 3 plays, 4 plays, 5 plays, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, maybe 10 plays, but all I need is one. Oh, remember this, I'm a defender. If I get Big Ten, all right, MAC, correct? Conference, Big Ten Conference, MAC Conference. I'm a defender. If I— how many games you guys play next year? 14? 14. Okay, if I get 1 sack a game, 14 sacks, you know what that means for me? First round. Roger Goodell. How you doing, Roger? Hat on. That's what that means for me. Won a game. You give up one sack a game. What does that mean for you? I'm the coach. Get your ass over here and sit down. I'm Brady Hope. Come on, Kyle. Brady! Matter of fact, just stand right here. Stand right here. Boom. Stay there. That's where you find yourself. You give up one sack a game, you ain't very good. Matter of fact, you're terrible, as Charles Barkley would say. You're terrible. You get one sack a game as a defender, you're all world. Now, let's try this again. Come up, go through your thought processes. You know what time of day it is, you know what you're trying to accomplish. Scoot up a little bit, scoot up a little bit. Now, let me see you get further. Here we go. Set, go. Stick. Now, count. Slide that way. Slide that way. Back, back. Slide over again. Do it again. Do it again. On the defender. Here we go. Scoot up a little bit, guys. Handle lock, handle lock, handle lock. Set, go. Go, go, go. You see the difference? Yeah. So, but huge. We're talking about maybe this much difference. We're talking about cutting wood, hmm, maybe 3 feet, no big deal. But we're talking about trying to cover space as an athlete, this is huge. This right here is the difference between if we're Usain Bolt Here to here, one of those. Here to here, few tenths of a second, world record, just a guy. That is big. Here to here, All-Pro offensive lineman, All-Pro defensive end. Here to here, on the bench or one of the best. If you can just limit this
