Pull Up Alternative (Big Athletes)

Josh demonstrates a pull-up modification for bigger athletes: feet stay on the ground while a weighted bar sits on a rack, letting legs assist through tough spots. As strength builds, reduce leg help to shift load to the back and shoulders.

Today's episode of O-Line TV, we're going to talk about something that most of us hate doing, and that's the pull-up. So we have something that could help bigger athletes with their pull-ups if you can't get one or you're struggling or they're intimidating for you. So what we're going to do is we're going to set up a— before you get set up, Josh, we're going to set up a bar on a rack. And what we have here, we kind of loaded it up with some weight. You'll see why in a second. We want to just make sure this bar stays down. It doesn't jump the rack as we're doing this. So we're going to get set up under the bar. Like a normal pull-up with whatever grip you want. Josh chose to go wide, so we're going to go wide. And then you're going to perform a pull-up even though your feet are on the ground. Maintain the integrity of the pull-up and just control your weight coming down and then pull as much as you can coming up. Now do what you can. If you're having trouble and get stuck on the way up, say you get stuck right there, now it's when you can use your legs to help you, assist you and complete the full range of motion. With your legs on the ground. This will allow you to control it as much as you can, as much as you want, as much as you need to be able to complete the full rep. And as we get better— that's good, Josh— as you get better, obviously you'll be able to use your legs less and less and use your upper body and your back more and more. Again, I know it's an intimidating movement as we get higher up and we're hanging there and it's hard because we're bigger athletes, but it's something we have to do. The stronger our back is, the stronger our shoulders are going to be, the stronger the torque is going to be when you're striking. So the back is the key to being a great athlete, and also you're able to control your body. And that's another thing— we got to be able to control someone else, you should be able to control your body as well. Hope that helps you. Take this into the weight room. Don't be intimidated by pull-ups. Find a way to get it done, and this is one way that can help you.
