Welcome to the first official Nourish Move Love podcast episode. Today's a special one for many reasons, but mostly because I'm pulling back the curtain on something you've been asking about non stop. And that is, what is it really like to film a workout program with my husband, Tim? Welcome to the set, Tim.
Hello. Thank you.
This is fun. Athlete 25 was a sprint of filming 10 brand new workouts for you guys and plenty of moments that had us looking at each other. Like, what are we doing here? I signed them up for it. But inside today's episode, we're going to take you behind the scenes of what it was really like to film athlete 25, mostly sharing the stuff you didn't see on camera. Tim's even going to share with us his favorite and least favorite workouts from the program. His answers might surprise you. And for the guys watching this episode, Tim is going to give you a little message on maybe if you're on the fence about trying Athlete 25 with your wife, your partner, or your sister, that maybe why you should try it. So stay tuned for that message. But overall, if you're wondering what it's like to get a front row seat to filming a program, this is your behind the scenes sneak peek. So let's dive in.
All right, let's do it.
Okay, we're going to kick it off today. We're with a question from a YouTube member named Noel, and she said, I'm wondering why you included Tim when most of your content is geared towards women. Did Tim have a lot of input with creating the workouts? So let's just answer the elephant in the room. Right away, everyone was like, why Tim? Where's Rachel? What's going on? So this is the first program Tim and I have ever filmed together. And honestly, we've done a couple live events before.
Yes, we've done some program together.
We've done some live workouts together before. And I wanted to film a program with Tim for a long time. It's been taken 10 years of convincing and the timing just kind of like magically worked out. To be honest. Rachel was getting married and taking a honeymoon, and so she was going to be gone during the time when we film our New Year's program. So it felt like the perfect time to insert Tim. And if I was going to insert Tim, I knew I wanted to film an athletic based program. We also get emails and DMS every day from women who are saying, I want my husband to work out or my husband loves your workouts. What's A male version he could follow. And I'm like, he can 100 do our workouts. But because there isn't a guy actually in the videos, it feels girly to do the workouts. So this was kind of like an entry point to. To open it up for the women to invite their husbands in with them. Because, like, we've been working out together for years, for sure.
Yeah.
And I think working out together is a huge part of our relationship.
It is. It is, absolutely.
So we wanted to open that door to invite people to work out together. I think it builds relationship. I think it builds strength together. It, like, puts you guys on the level playing field. We're both getting up. We're both cranking it out. We're in this together. And so that's what this program is also. It's an invitation to, like, do it together, get stronger together. So kind of twofold as to why Tim was in the program and then. Tim, did you have a lot of input in creating the workouts?
I certainly had some. I wouldn't say a lot, but my wife is often in her office kind of doing exercises in the office. Sort of like she maps out the workouts by herself in the office. You know, I'll be sitting out here on my computer or something, and she's doing some lunges in the office, which is not normal, but that's just what my wife does. And I've live, you know, learned to live with that. But oftentimes she'll ask me, you know, like, what's a good. What's some of your favorite arm exercises or triceps or. Or push exercises or cardio or core, you know, whatever it might be. And so I certainly had some input into some of the moves that I do and kind of offering those as input into the new program. But you're certainly still the brains behind it.
Yeah. We wanted to make this an athletic program and, like, training truly how we train, and. And I just wanted to remove any of the girly exercises or barriers to male entry for this program.
They did have rules on some of the. Some of the exercises. Yes.
So Tim would Xnate anything that felt too girly. So the program doesn't have any girly moves.
Yeah. Yeah.
Okay. Next up is a question from Alyssa.
Who.
Alyssa was actually on set with us in one of our workouts, which is really fun. And this one's for Tim. She says, was there any hesitation to being in the new workout program?
I mean, the honest answer is, yes, there was a little hesitation, because I'm not Used to being on camera, I do play professional beach volleyball, and that's just me playing a sport that I've played for a lot of years. And it's pretty natural. And I'm not sitting there, you know, trying to focus on the moves that we're doing and going through all the actions at the same time, you know, even little things like that. So being on camera is pretty normal for me, but not necessarily in this context. So there is some hesitation in that regard, but other than that, I think know we kind of. Kind of looked forward to it and talked about it for a while, but when you first asked me, I was like, you sure you want to do that? So there. There was some hesitation, but honestly, it was pretty fun, you know, so I'm glad we did it. And I think, you know, we often, you know, work hard to, like, work out together on Saturdays when we have time together or whatever day it might be. So this was a good, good opportunity to, you know, do it quite a bit more together and, you know, batch a couple, which also makes it that much more difficult to get through it.
Yes. And. Which leads us to our next question, but before we get there. And, like, basically, it was really interesting because, I mean, I've been asking him, like, planting the seed for a long time, like, when are you going to film a program with me? You want to jump in for a program? But so it just worked out really organically that this was the time.
Yeah. And when she gets an idea in her head, you, it's gonna happen. So you just kind of go with it.
This is true. His biggest hesitation was he thought it was weird that my team, who helps out behind set, like, running timers, taking behind the scenes, making sure I don't miss an exercise, was watching him. He thought that was weird. And that's just what we.
I'm not used to people watching me work out, and so to have a group of people all kind of helping with the filming and, you know, stuff like that, I was like, it was just different.
Was it weird to work out without music?
No, I don't think so. Again, I think a lot of my focus, at least during the programs, is focusing on the exercise, trying to keep in sync with you as much as I can. And again, it's a little bit. A little different style than I'm used to, so I had to kind of. That's where a lot of my focus was. I like working out to music, but I didn't. Didn't really notice it too much.
Did you ever just, like, Stop doing an exercise.
Yes. Yes, I did.
I was like, rachel doesn't do that. We're on camera. You can't stop. Stop.
Okay. It wasn't. It wasn't that I stopped. I just. I couldn't keep going. I think I'll get to that story in a minute, though, so we'll. We'll keep going.
Okay, first, tell everybody. What was your code word? We were upstairs changing.
Oh, yeah.
Between workouts, and Tim was like, okay. So it was one of the.
Okay, it was one of the first workouts, and I am just dying. Okay. Like, there's. There's pieces that I'm really good at working out, and there's pieces that I'm not so good. And when you mix the two together, it was. It was really challenging for me. So I was upstairs changing into our next outfit because you do a couple in a day, and I was like, you know what? I'm going to have to have a code word here, because if I need to breathe, I need to breathe. And so our code word was. Oh, boy. Which you will not hear on the. On the films. But, yeah, so we had to have a code word in case I was about to die or fall over.
How many times did you think you were going to throw up?
Ooh, there's only a couple moments in those workouts where I was really struggling. I'm not much of a throw upper, so I think my answer is no there. But there's a couple where I was like, if this doesn't stop soon, I'm just going to stop.
But he did. At one point, he did just stop. I. Okay, this is a perfect segue to our next question from Sarah, also one of our YouTube community members. Did this give Tim a new realization of how tough your job is? It's a loaded question. How many videos did you film in a day? Any injuries? And how did you prepare for the film session? So let's start with one. Did this give you. I'm excited. Did this give you a new realization of how tough my job is?
I've. I've known how tough your job is. You know, we've been married 10, 10, almost 11 years now, so we've had those discussions, but, you know, it. You know, doing a lot of those workouts, and I think we talked about it afterwards. A lot of it is almost. You become more mentally tired than you do physically tired sometimes because those shoot days get really long. And like I said, the focus to stay in sync and to keep up with each other in the. In the sense you know, just of. In terms of reps and speed and all the things. And so not only are you physically tired because we're doing multiple in a day, but the mental tiredness, I think, is what almost surprised me more than the physical tiredness because you do kind of get this adrenaline for shoot days, which is. It's sort of fun, right? Like, it's almost like building up to a long race or something. You get this adrenaline to get through the day and stuff like that. So that. That part's kind of fun. But certainly it's a challenging day. It's a long day.
He now understands that come dinner time after a shoot day, I'm just glazed over.
Yeah, she looks pretty tired after shoot days.
Okay. How many videos did we film in a day?
A couple times we did three. I think you actually did additional, like one or one on a couple of those days.
Yeah, we had to film additional content.
But I think the other part of that, the mental toughness is after each shoot, you do like these rounds of pictures and then you have to hold some poses. And that sucks really bad, actually, because your legs are already burning or your arms are already burning, and then you're like, why don't you go hold that suc. Same exact position right there while we take some pictures for thumbnails and stuff like that.
So, yeah, that was another question or something I wanted to hit on is like, what surprise do or like explain. There's so much more to just showing up and filming a workout, right? So like, if we would film a workout and then we take pictures for the blog and then we take different pictures for like Pinterest, you know, different. We take verticals, we take horizontals, then we take thumbnails, which was Tim's probably least favorite part.
I loved it. I loved it.
We take thumbnails for YouTube, making funny faces. Because believe it or not, the most clicked on ones are when we're like.
Yeah, I'm better at those ones anyways. Being serious is not my thing. But yeah. And then also some of the. I don't know what they were like little reels or whatever, redoing some of the exercises just for little smaller, shorter clips.
How many push ups did we do for the trailer?
Oh, that was quite a few. Yeah. What. What happened there? I think. I don't know if the lighting was wrong or something, but I think we did so many. I think I finally was like, are we done here? Because I can't keep going, you know?
But yeah, all for you guys to get like a 15 second sneak peek into what the program is like 75 pushups later, but it got pretty sweaty on set. We normally have one sweat towel that we use for me and one for Rachel for the entirety of a film day. Filming three to four workouts in a day. And Tim, how many sweat towels did you go through?
Well, it's more so, I mean, you guys have these little, like, paper towel, little sweat towels. Those just aren't going to work for me. So I would go get a beach towel from the basement and bring that up because I actually sweat. I don't just glisten like you girls do. And so it actually got really slippery on the floor a couple times, which is something that people probably don't know a lot about, but. So you're kind of juggling around that a little bit.
Yes. Speaking of how sweaty the workouts got, it feels like the perfect moment to shout out Element Electrolytes, who's our brand partner sponsoring our first ever podcast episode. So thank you to Element. But it's kind of fun because Element is salt based. And so for us, it feels really natural that element electrolytes are part of our routine because Tim was actually chugging raw salt on the beach long before it was ever cooled. So let's. Like I mentioned, Tim plays professional beach volleyball. And so long days playing in the sand, he'd be chugging raw salt to keep from cramping.
Yeah. So, okay, you don't take that out of context, please, because I don't necessarily chug salt, but in a. In the. In the very long beach volleyball tournament days, your body becomes very depleted and salt is actually really good at helping you maintain water. So I often. What I would do, since I didn't have a lot of other natural options, is I would literally take a salt shot with water and just kind of. And it helps you stay away and avoid cramping. And it really works really well. Element is such a better use case than salt shots.
Yeah. So that was like 14 years ago, 15 years ago on the beach. So when element electrolytes came out with a much better tasting version of electrolytes with sodium, potassium, and everything your body needs to keep you hydrated. And felt like a really natural fit. For us, it checks all the boxes, giving us everything we need and nothing we don't like. No added sugar. So we feel totally comfortable with our kids having sips and joining us too, and drinking out of our water bottles. So really grateful for Element. And if you want to try Element Electrolytes, you can get a free Sample pack with purchase. All you have to do is click the link in the description below so you can give them a try as well. Okay, so now that we've talked about everything that goes into filming the workout program, let's get into. Tell us more about what was your favorite workout from the program?
So I. It's a good question. I think this, this answer is kind of twofold. I think it was like day seven, it was a push day. I. Because I like, it was a lot of upper body, which I, I generally prefer, but it also humbled me quite a bit, which is sort of funny.
Because push day or pull day? Push day is day two.
Sorry. It was, it was a pull day. I missed that.
It was pull day. Okay. Pull day. Back and biceps.
Back and biceps. Yeah. So I actually enjoyed the workout. I don't actually work out biceps a lot, so it was funny to me because I think we started the workout with like, I think we did 10 pull ups and then we did some bicep curls and then we did like a back rows which also are bicep heavy. And then you had me go first to go do pull ups again. And it was like back to back to back to back. And now I don't work out my biceps. So. So because they're such. They're a secondary muscle to so many exercises, by the time I got to those pull ups, like, I was completely cash. Like, I need a. I need a at least a minute long break here. And So I did 10 pull ups in the first round. Great. That was no problem. It got to round two and I think I got three and failed. And this is when you were talking about when you just stopped. I'm like, I literally, I need to just wait for a minute because my, my biceps are just absolutely destroyed. Like a minute and a half into this workout. I really enjoyed the workout. But that, that also became like a core memory of my memories of this program because it was, it was humbling.
That's why we love shrink training, because it is humbling. And don't worry, if pull ups are not your jam, there is a modification you can absolutely follow along. But we both love pull ups. We're huge fans of push ups and pull ups as you'll get to know throughout this program. And so they're built into the program because I think it's like the most fit, efficient exercise you can do.
Oh, absolutely.
Okay. So that was your favorite. What was your least favorite day?
Honestly, one of the. It might have been day one, actually. Day one. This is Not a good selling point. But day one, workout one. Well, and that's. This is more so because of the way that I work out. This is this mixed strength with cardio, and when you mix those two things together, Tim doesn't do so well. I'm really good at doing strength, and I'm really good at doing cardio, but when you mix the two, I just. I struggle. And so now I think that's when the. The idea of a code word came to mind, because I'm like, glenn, if every workout is like this, I'm not gonna make it. Because there was a point where I think there was, like, five seconds left in the exercise, and I think I just kind of, like, held my breath and just finished it. I'm like, man, this is hard for me. So that was one of the hardest ones, I think. It's a legs and back workout, isn't it?
It's legs and back is. We love doing legs and back together. Typically, you don't like adding a cardio portion to it, correct? Yeah. So we love legs and back. We work out legs and back probably the most together. Like, that's like our go to. Whenever I'm short on time. It's legs and back. Legs and back is our jam.
And that's. That's actually why I. It's hard for me to say that's my least favorite, because I actually really do enjoy doing those two muscles together. It just really kicked my butt. So I had to pick something that wasn't my favorite, and that one really knocked me down hard. And that was workout, like, number one. And I'm like, oh, man, this is going to be such a hard program.
So don't feel defeated if workout one feels really hard. We always like to start the program with a bang. So workout one is always spicy, and then we end the week with a bang. So workout 5 and day 10 is usually pretty spicy as well. And then there's solid strength built in. In between. So, yes, I love the push day and leg days. Like, leg day and the push day were probably my favorite. The upper body day two and leg days. I love the leg days in the program. They're just great. They're really great. I also love the full body days, and I thought it was really fun to throw in the mix. Cardio, agility, and abs a day when you can drop the weights. Because strength training heavy for five days in a row is really hard. So we dropped the weights and we did some cardio and agility, which is, like, a really fun way to do cardio. It's how you prefer to do cardio.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it felt like a really, really natural fit. Okay, so after completing the workout program, would you film another program with me?
I would, I would, yeah. I think it was fun. And I think, you know, one of the, one of the things that makes me say that is, you know, the first couple workouts, we were kind of learning the flow a little bit. You know, like when you work out and I. And what I mean by that is, like, when you do your videos, you do a lot of the talking, you do a lot of the instruction, you talk through a lot of the modifiers. And so, like, I'm kind of finding my place and, well, where do I chime in? Can I ever give you a little break from talking things like that? Um, towards the end, I think we were having a little bit more fun kind of figuring out the flow. And so, you know, round two would be, you know, would be, I think, a lot more just easy and fluent for us and could be a lot more fun too.
Yeah. You'll notice throughout the program, I always say it's like I get nervous. Generally I don't get nervous filming, but I always get nervous for day one. And so I feel like day one is always never the best, but it's like the first workout of the program. Uh, but you'll see a lot more interaction as we get through the week, especially into week two. It just became more natural for us to, to like, be on set together.
Yeah, I totally agree. Yeah.
Okay, so what would you say to any guys out there who are on the fence about doing this program?
I think it's a good program. I think it's a good program. Like, there's still parts that I don't typically work out the way that your program does, but there's so many parts that use a lot of the exercise that I use. But honestly, like, it's a two week program, you can do it twice if you want. But honestly, building the relationship like, with you and doing that is. Is actually really beneficial. And as non masculine as that sounds, it, it actually is really important. And I think, you know, I encourage a lot of you guys to do that with your wife or spouse or partner, you know, or sibling or whoever it might be. But certainly there's a lot of exercises that are. That are humbling. And that's where, you know, I'm talking about workout number one. Or I'm like, this is actually really tough stuff and it's. And sometimes for me, like, Changing it up is equally as important as, you know, just staying consistent and so, you know, new, new exercises, new flow. I, I really enjoy that stuff. I think that's a lot of what keeps me motivated is I need like new challenges and I need to strive for new stuff. And so doing in a workout like that and a new program like that was, is, Is great.
So if you are looking for a new challenge, I highly encourage you to join us. For athlete 25, it is 10 brand new workouts. We're asking for 25 minutes a day. It's an awesome challenge and chance for you to not only build, build strength, but confidence and community, whether it's with your family or your partner. It's just an awesome program to give a try and highly effective to have an accountability partner.
Absolutely.
Or a competitive partner who's going to push your weights. Like we just like push each other. I work, I work out harder when I'm with him because I want to keep up with his weights and his pull ups and push ups.
Yeah. And that's where I can't lose to my wife, even though I did in that pull day in pull ups, which that's all right. Was embarrassing.
Maybe you'll get a second chance if we bring him back on set. If you guys love athlete25, there might be a chance for Tim to come back on set for another program, but it's really up to you guys. So to be determined. But that's a wrap on episode one and so thanks for joining us, guys. We do have another episode coming for you.
