The last week in April is celebrated as Every Kid healthy week by actionforkids.org each year this special week shines a spotlight on the great efforts school partners are doing to improve the health and wellness of their students and the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning in our area. Students at Winter Park High School will participate and engage fellow students in Food Revolution Day to bring awareness on getting back to the basics, cooking from scratch, eating local fresh produce, sharing cooking skills and increasing food knowledge. Teenage Total Nutrition and Therapeutics client Kennedy Graham explains how poor food choices put her on the path to develop diabetes.
I basically ate junk food all the time whenever I wanted to and I felt really bad. I just, I didn't have energy at all. I hated running, hated athletics when I was little. I loved athletics. I just really, I felt hungry 24 7. So I'd eat, eat, eat and eat and eat because I was eating so much sugar and I was eating so much gluten that it was harming my body. I'm not supposed to have any of what I was eating, but my family's always had like healthy. My dad always eats healthy. So I already knew most of the stuff, what she was talking about. I have the gene for celiac disease. I have the rare gene of eight for celiac disease. The most common ones too. I, I was pre diabetic. I was borderline diabetic with type 2 diabetes, so my insulin was 30 and it should be less than 8. I've lost 18 pounds since I started watching my sugars and not eating gluten. So it's helped a lot. I'm doing basketball, softball. I dance after school and during school. I've always danced, but now it's a lot easier and it's just a lot easier for me to do. I'm like not out of breath from dancing. It's changed my life a lot and it's made me feel a lot better about myself and just about like on the inside, it just makes me feel a lot better. I have twice the energy I used to have and I just feel so much better. I guess I would really have to thank my mom and my dad for helping me get here and helping Ms. Lori and Ms. Christine and Ms. Jamie for helping me and just getting me to what I am today. So I really appreciate it.
