Healthy Eating

Promotional/interview-style piece (March 2016) featuring clinicians from Total Nutrition and Therapeutics offering practical nutrition and health-coaching advice. Emphasizes food-first approach, addressing inflammation, hidden food allergens, sugar/carbohydrate reduction, supplementation/testing as secondary, and hands-on coaching (meal planning, shopping, label reading) for sustainable lifestyle change. Invites readers to visit YourHometownHealth.com for services.
If you are overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet information out there, you are not alone. In honor of National Nutrition Month, we decided to check in with the experts at Total Nutrition and Therapeutics for some good, sound advice on beginning your journey toward a healthier you.
I believe truly that nutrition is fundamentally important to health. We really work with people here, truly, and transforming their lives with first food. Food is always pivotally first and then filling in the gaps with supplementation and then doing some testing to help them not only understand where they are from a healthcare standpoint. Is that it? Is that all we're looking at? No, that's not all we're looking at. We need to look bigger than that. We need to look at inflammation. We need to look at, are there some underlying low grade infections going on? You know, are there some food allergens that people are ingesting that they may not even know? And what's our sugar intake? Because I think that's the biggest thing that we as Americans do completely wrong. We eat way too many carbohydrates, way too much sugar. That's what we need to be fixing. The point of entry to our clinic is typically someone who is looking to improve their overall quality of life, to really improve the way in which they feel, to improve the way in which they look and ultimately to improve their functioning, to get them to a level of optimal functioning. So we offer services typically that are rooted in nutrition. We the what, why and how of eating as the foundation. And then we team them up with a health coach that teaches them how to apply that information.
Well, I'm a health coach and basically what I do, after they see Lori, she will devise a plan for them. And I actually teach our clients how to apply those practical applications. So some of the things that we do is I'll teach them the what, why and how of eating. Then we go through meal planning the next week and then a shopping experience. So it's a little bit different from what they're used to. We'll look at the labels, talk about label padding, and then finding those secret ingredients and those secret words that a lot of people don't know about. We always look for five ingredients or less. And the biggest thing is if you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body. So don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize. What I do is important because it places the practical applications in the client's life. So, so they have the answers, they have the results. But now what do you do with it, so they learn how to set goals and prepare for a healthy lifestyle. There's no finish line. It's a lifestyle, so they need to know how to shop for their new changes and just how to deal with it.
In general, the ideal candidate for Total Nutrition and Therapeutics is anyone who honestly wants to live a more fulfilling and vital life. If you've been all over the place and you have a health condition, it's not getting better or you know that you could be living better and having more energy, come see me.
