Your mitochondria use an electron relay race to make ATP. Proteins in the inner membrane pass electrons between complexes, pumping protons to create a gradient that ATP synthase uses to generate the energy your cells run on.

Well, I didn't get a chance yet to tell you about how the electron transport chain works, but I'm going to tell you now. So this is the thing that actually makes that energy, and it works like a relay race. We've all seen relay races where you have a runner and they pass a baton to the next runner who passes the baton to the next runner, and they try to cross the finish line first. Okay. This is how your energy is created in the electron transport chain. But instead of runners, you have proteins. And instead of passing a baton, they pass electrons. So one protein passes it to the next protein and passes the electron, and at the end result, you have ATP. It's a little bit more complicated, but that's basically the series. They pass these electrons along.
