Mind and Body

A wellness team explains how trauma, food addiction, and unprocessed grief drive eating behaviors. Mental health coaching combined with nutrition and fitness changes creates lasting transformation, not just temporary fixes.
A good team of fitness and nutritional experts can help you achieve your wellness goals. But have you ever considered your mental wellness? In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, the specialists at Total Nutrition and Therapeutics explain why some of their clients are finding it effective to include a mental health coach in their wellness routine.
Oftentimes, when clients come to see me, there's a relationship to food that at the core of their being and the reason why they are responding to food now the way they are, it's a result of past injuries, past hurts, past relationships with food, whether it be addiction to food, whether it be a trauma that has never been resolved. But whatever the case may be, if that's not resolved within them, ultimately the change that Total Nutrition is trying to help you achieve is not going to be achieved. So Karen's role within the clinic is to provide another opportunity for you to have someone that you can talk to and you can work down and peel off those layers of the onion. That's what we like to refer to as layers of the onion. To get to that deep core of helping you understand how did you end up in the position you're in right now.
I really believe in Lori's philosophy of helping people age well or deal with their medical issues through nutrition and supplements and lifestyle change. And lifestyle transformation brings a lot of challenges, brings up a lot of difficulties for some people, brings up even some early family of origin issues. So some of the things that stroke people are struggling with is not necessarily what they're eating, it's what's eating them. Some people do have a legitimate food addiction. If we can find some other ways that they can feel more relaxed in their bodies, more comfortable with change. Some people have unprocessed grief. We have a lot of loss in our lives that we go through in the United States or in a lot of cultures. We don't really have a lot of good rituals for grieving. So sometimes it does not get completed and people continue to eat, gain weight. A lot of people lose their loved ones. A lot of aging people are losing their health. So there's other disenfranchised losses that people have to deal with. And I feel I can be helpful with that.
