Every year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates March as National Nutrition Month. The theme for 2015 is Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle, which encourages everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans that are focused on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices and getting daily exercise in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health. We know we should eat healthy, but for some, when you're on the run and hunger hits, you don't know what to grab. Whether it's carryout, food court, office, cafeteria or a sit down restaurant, there are smart choices everywhere. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has put together a list of 30 Ways to Eat healthy on the go. Here are a few Think ahead and plan where to eat. Look for menus with a variety of options. Think about your food choices for the entire day. If you know you are going out later, have a light breakfast or lunch. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink, one for women and two for men. It can increase appetite and is full of empty calories. Ask for sauces, dressings and toppings to be served on the side. That way you can regulate the portion and for a lighter meal, order a child sized portion or an appetizer in place of a main course. Total Nutrition and Therapeutics client Tracy Oliver explains how poor food choices and a busy schedule added to her family's unhealthy lifestyle.
Living a busy life with active kids and just my job in general. We ate a lot of fast food and that was kind of our lifestyle for a very long time and unfortunately it started causing issues with my children and their weight and how they looked at themselves and how they felt about themselves. My oldest child was a competitive dancer for a two year period we traveled with a team and I was talked to a number of times about her weight. As a mother, that's heartbreaking to know that you contributed to that. I had everything to do with that. To hear as a mother that you failed your kids health wise, it's heartbreaking. I'm their mom. I'm supposed to be their caretaker and not do anything to harm them or to keep them from being successful in whatever it is that they want to do. It was emotional, very emotional. Lots of tears shed. You know, I tried TNT probably three years ago and I failed at the initial trial. When I say I failed, I mean I didn't really take on the lifestyle that I should have at that time. And I reached out to Lori again and Lori met with me and basically wanted to know did I mean business. This time and so she put me on a trial period. When I started this journey back In January of 2013, I was at 298 and I wore size 22 triple XL3XL. So for me to go and buy that size clothing and to look at that on a scale, it was terrible. It was like I felt like I had already died, but I was still breathing. Lori and her team play a huge role in my success and even when I get to that healthy spot where I need to be, I'll still continue to come to TNT for accountability purposes. I tell Lori all the time that she saved my life. I'm not ready to orphan my kids. They have a new mom.
Studies have shown that becoming overweight is a major risk factor in developing type 2 diabetes. Today, roughly 30% of overweight people have the disease and 85% of type 2 diabetics are overweight. American Diabetes association observes Diabetic Alert Day on the fourth Tuesday of every March. This year it takes place on Tuesday, March 24th. The American Diabetes association describes alert day as a one day wake up call asking the American public to take the diabetes Risk test and to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
