In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, host Margaret Spence, founder of the Inclusion Learning Lab, examines how Black women are systematically erased from talent development and career advancement in corporate settings. She argues that the conventional "career ladder" is a myth for Black women, who encounter multiple hidden hurdles: an initial demand to prove skills without ever receiving a clear blueprint; stretch assignments that are low‑visibility or “garbage” work rather than career‑building projects; shifting goalposts that move the required competencies after the employee has met them; and a lack of transparent manager sponsorship or advocacy. Spence cites Lean In’s Women in the Workplace data showing that Black women receive significantly less managerial support, sponsorship, and opportunities to showcase their work. She also deconstructs the biased language used in talent processes—terms like “best employee,” “most qualified,” and “culture fit” that subtly signal that Black women are not being groomed for leadership. Throughout, she offers concrete strategies: keep a career journal to track skills and accomplishments, map those to target roles, actively ask managers about the purpose of assignments, and shift focus from being the “best employee” to becoming a “future leader.” The episode ends with a call for Black women to take ownership of their career narratives, recognize the systemic barriers, and use self‑advocacy and documentation to navigate or exit environments that do not support their advancement.
